So Hello my name is Mark. I picked up this project from Craigslist for $500.00 a 1999 X1 Lightning. It ran but knocked, low end someone ran it too low on oil. I have quite a few pictures of the progress since teardown and up to now. Friday I am going to a shop up in North Phoenix to replace the races and Timken bearings in the left case half and set the Endplay as well as true the flywheels as needed. To shorten the story a bit and catch you up I bought another engine of Ebay that was to be a drop in replacement, At pick up time I found a crack in the crankcase where the shock mounts. So the negotiation began. I got that engine for $700.00 10,000 miles on it. Stripped it and Borrowed the Crank pistons and cylinders for the other engine. That is where I stand right now. After the new bearings I will start the process of putting it back together. Well My pictures are too big and I have a meeting to go to. I will hit you with pictures soon. |

This is HOT!!! If I had a bit more $$$ this would be close to my goal for this bike.. I think I could do without the white wheels and the rear plastic but otherwise that would be it..What do you think am I a fool for not going a bit further adn powdercoat the frame now??? You can't hurt my feelings so give it up?? These are the new wheels for the rods.. Lighter than the other set of wheels that were in it.. |

I did pick up a yellow front fender @ a swap meet for $10.00 so maybe I could get a yellow tank cover and go Black and Yellow. Anyone got a picture of a black frame with Yellow plastic? Or do a Yellow frame? |

Black frame and yellow plastic was a stock color combination. I sure like mine http://www.google.com/search?q=buell+x1+reactor+ye llow&hl=en&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=EV6m UOnHDtPHqAGGloCgDg&ved=0CAQQ_AUoAA&biw=1258&bih=78 8 |

Why don't you want a white frame/bdodywork and why don't you want an S1 short tale? |

The white looks good If I had that I would like it, but I don't have it.. The white frame might be too much to maintain. And the frame is alreay black. If this was my only project I might put more funds into it but it is not. The other reason is just a lot more work to take it the rest of the way apart and time,I want to ride it. As for the rear plastic I kinda like the look without the plastic. I am not as young and ambitious as I once was. Maybe after I ride it a while I will see how I want to proceed.. |

Props on the color combination, Neil; looks great w/ the cases, etc. My S1W (profile pic) is flat black with Nuclear Blue frame; more changes over time. Mark, I'm obviously biased, but dig the direction. White's not my thing personally but it does look sharp. |

I am like the look of the frame contrasting color,Leaning towards a yellow powder coat for the frame and pieces as well as the tail piece. Then find a tank cover because I already have a yellow front fender. I think it would be nice.. |

Well you helped sway my old lazy butt into the Powdercoat Yellow it is. I will have to send a pic later but I got to know my Buell real well this weekend. Nothing but Frame now, and a pile of parts.. When my plastic shows up I will get to the powdercoater to match the yellow as best we can. |

O.K. so a little update. I dropped off the frame and various parts for powder coat this week. Safety Yellow seemed to match up pretty good with the new yellow plastic. And The guy rebuilding my crankshaft and boring my jugs called and said that he is all done with my parts. End play is set so I should be good to go back together soon. NOW all I gotta do is pay for it all.. So much for a cheap project.. Also I did pick up the yellow wind screen tank cover and lower fairing. Still need to get the factory headlight brackets headlight and windscreen mounts. More money more money more money. 8-) |

Finally got to take some pictures. Color looks closer in person not so much in pictures. Match isn't perfect but looks pretty good.Got to get new bolts, and such to put it back together with. Engine is still on my bench but Crankshaft is all rebuilt with new parts new pistons bored .010 over. new bearings and races throughout. Slow process with Christmas and such. Next is to rebuild the heads. |
