I managed to make a TunerPro log run in MLV. All the numbers are right running the log and all three paired maps are there
IE The VE, Ignition and AFR. The log is switching between the TP 8BIT and RPM cells as it runs on both Ve and AFR maps.





The top AFR map is the one generated from a MSQ file for a XB12 and the one below is one I made up based on information from ECM-SPY about how the AFR should be, more or less. Below 14.7 is rich and over is lean.

I have no real plans to change the fuel map on my bike, as yet, as it runs great at the moment. I find the 2010 bike is doing a lot less MPG than the 06 bike (a average of 8 MPG down) 47 over 55 MPG which is about 15% less. Lean engines run hotter and this one seems to be running a bit rich which maybe why it runs cooler over the 06 bike. That is, of course, not the whole story. My bike was setup for a CAT and has smaller headers as well. If I am going to spend money on gas I would rather get it from extra performance. We will see.

is there an advantage to using MLV?

Only if you want to, in my opinion, use the "Ve anylyzer" function of the prog. What you do is load your logged run, run the anylyzer function and is shows you the cells you need to change in the AFR map, lean or rich, rather than change them via old school "seat of the pants" road testing which of course can take a long time as is VERY subjective. It sounds like a good idea and why I have been looking at it but there is a "but" and it is a big one? Part of which is I have not tried this function, on the bike, so do not know how well, if it all, it works anyway?

MLV is from EFI Analytics/TunerStudios a software company and uses there own .MSQ files. The early ones are not cross compatible with progs like TunerPro so if you have the bigger fuel maps used in the later Buells your stuffed. You need to buy the new version of TunerStudio that allows you to make the bigger map frames IE Late Buells. I have tried to rework a old type (others have tried as well) .MSQ file (which I would guess stands for MegaSQuirt) for the bigger map but no go with MLV and just says you need TunerStudio. There are old .MSQ files about for the 06 bikes so you can use them. If you use a TunerPro to log a run you will need to edit it in something like Excel, a long winded pain in the ass, to make it work in MLV. Other wise you will need to buy ECM-SPY and TunerStudios software to log a run if you want to use Ve anylyzer. In other words you have to pay.

My advise, after spending a stupid number of hours going through all of this IE MLV, ECM-SPY, etc, is? If you have a running problem with your bike use TunerPro to check it out as it will give you all the data you need to see any problems with the likes of sensors, timing, etc you will ever need to source problems. It is a clear, Pro diagnostic tool, easy to use with only a few "need to know - easy to find" setup details and free. I have just used it to find a problem with my IAT and is something you would NOT know without a diagnostic prog.

Ok the next bit - Tuning?

Please, please try and understand this? Under normal setup/stock conditions all of these bikes should run ok without problems IE no bad idle, flat spots, surging, etc. Does anyone really think, if honest, a maker would develop and market a bike that would run like that.


Next bit - Proof of the Pudding? And I have been "Pudding" for six years now?

I "opened up" the air box and fitted a K&N air filter on my 06 bike with no problems. I then fitted a Remus can with no problems but it worked better with the Remus fuller device as it then fueled better in the low to mid rev range. In my opinion the 06 bikes run a bit on the lean side most of the time.

I "opened up" the air box and fitted a Piper air filter on the 2010 bike with no problem. I then fitted a Stealth can with no problem. The low/mid rev range seems good and much along the lines of the last setup on the 06 bike. If anything I think it is running slightly rich as getting a touch of soot from the can. I think these later bikes run on the rich side anyway.

The point is do not "bust your ass" on tuning but make sure the bike is running right from stock and work from that? And just because it has a 1200cc engine it is NOT AND NEVER WILL produce the output of a modern engine. The best it will ever do, and the thing to aim for, is that real smooth "kick in the ass" Torque that these bikes do so well.

14.7 is lean and these bikes will run there.It is agood number for low load and cruise conditions. But for high load/acceleration and full throttle areas we tune to 13.6. Much safer and will make more power and run smoother. We do the 31% and higher from 2400rpm like that. And companies are constrained by EPA and noise rev's so bike will be tuned accordingly.
