Anybody got a spare? I posted under "Parts Wanted" as well. |

Wondering if a Sportster reg will work? Ventura Harley is open Sunday. |

I don't think so. but perhaps the thing to do is bring the regulator to the shop and see what it looks like to them? Sometimes shops employ smart people but they seldom work on Sundays |

Much better than stock: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SHINDENGEN-MOSFET-FH020AA- REGULATOR-RECTIFIER-KIT-REPLACES-FH012AA-/38047304 1443?_trksid=p4340.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26 algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D274034 2611715948123%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D1 %26sd%3D360358573656%26 How I set up mine: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/667134.html?1326751428 Better be sure it's only the VR, being a 2006 it might be your 77-connector. |

Thanks Xbimmer. The connector does show signs of overheating on one pin but the reg is only putting out 3.6v connecting right to the reg wires. |

Oh yeah, and the stator checks out good... |

That's good then. If you go stock the new one should come with the improved connector that eliminates the 77, or you can cut everything off and direct wire. Those 77's suck and once they start to go they allow the VR to kill itself, my first 77 heated up so bad it melted the connector halves together... |

I think I'll go with Shindengen. Trying to get it overnight for Tuesday as the Uly is my primary transport for work. Eighty miles round trip and taking the car sucks. No lane splitting and twice as much gas. |

Hey xbimmer, can you tell what the distance between the mounting holes is? I want to start building the bracket... |

Holes in my bracket are 2 3/4" apart, but my FH012AA came with two slots, not a hole and a slot pictured in the above link, so accuracy wasn't critical. I don't know what a FH020AA configuration would be, maybe email the seller? Also, the spacing of the screws holding the bracket and plate together is important, there're only two open places for the heads to protrude where it bolts to the bike. Look around the back of the VR you'll see what I mean. Smaller screws than the 1/4X20's I used would work fine there. |

Shindengen is the way to go. For a quicker mounting route, try this: I rigged it up when overseas on the bike last summer and didn't have access to tools to make a custom mount. Then realized that I didn't need one. 5000 miles, tons of use and bumps and haven't had any problems since. Attached to one oil cooler mount with blue locktite. Gets as much or more cooling and opens up front of cylinder to substantially more air flow:

Think my VR is going bad. Couple of questions: 1. Can they be "going" bad. Work at times, and not work at times. 2. Can the weather - specifically the temperture affect the VR? I ask because when it is warm - at / above 70' - out, the engine light comes on and my charging system seems to stop working. The battery gets drained and the bike won't restart sometimes. When it is cold out the engine light stays off more often and the battery stays charged. I have tested the stator with a multimeter & done the sniff test, and it checks out okay. The whole deal has been frustrating as hell! Bike is an 09XT. Any ideas? |

Thanks for input guys. Made up the adapter plate last night and hopefully make up the piece tonight. Hoping reg will be here Wednesday or Thursday... I like the ingenuity desert_bird! |

Whisper, my original VR spiked once (blew the headlight) then died completely. Drove home on the battery and luckily was still home when it wouldn't start again. The second VR would charge okay but sometimes spike randomly. Went through about four bulbs before VR number three was delivered. Yours is a little different but sounds plausible. Hot/cold problems make sense since it is mounted in one big heat sink. Xbimmer, how long have you had the MOSFET on the bike now? If the durability is there I may consider it for number four. |

Has anyone put the Shindengen on an 08 or newer single phase XB? My VR has on a few startups not charged until I was a mile down the road and has burnt out it's share of light bulbs with spikes. I'm about to order a replacement, but have not been sold on the Shindengen yet. If I'm spending over $120, I want the best choice. Or, in other words, "HELP". |

Ok, after some searching and reading, it looks like the FH020 will work on single and three stage or 2 wire and 3 wire systems. I need to get this funded right away. |

Ourdee, the unit pictured above is on my '08. Works just fine. Smooth and predictable. But if you are having spikes and drops you should take a good look at your stator. The Uly stators simply suck. And a bad stator will fry any VR/rectifier. |

Well heat may not be the only problem. Think the VR is toast. Went out today to test the bike today. It's cool and rainy here. I had the charger on overnight so the battery was fully charged. Started the bike up and tested at the connector. Most volts I registered was 4.1. As the bike got hot it went down into the two's and was going lower when I shut the bike off. I tested both the pins in the connector, and the leads before the connector and got the same results with either. I have not blown any bulbs, But have had the lights spike/surge/go real bright, then go dim a few times. The engine light did not come on, but I'm thinking that is because I had a fully charged battery. I'm guessing the engine light only comes on when the battery power and voltage drop below a certain level. Anybody know for sure? Found thin in Shindengen info: Often the stator has failed and the regulator gets the blame. A stator is difficult to check completely as they often fail only when hot. How true is this. I've tested the stator both when hot and right at start up, and believe mine is good. |

Yeah, my light came on about two minutes before my battery went dead. Before that I just noticed the bike starting sluggishly all day. I did the standard resistance and continuity tests as per the manual and both were good so I decided to go for the VR first. |

http://roadstercycle.com Can provide you with a Cycle Electric stator and Cycle Electric regulator/rectifier for less than stock replacement. The stator is 38 amp 3 phase but I believe it will fit the late model bikes also. The upside is a 2 year warranty when installed as a pair. |

So what did you do? Looks like you mounted it to the stock VR? Good idea, maybe later you can gut the original for better cooling. Here's how I fixed my stocker:

I am going to get something, as others have, like this. A tested and proved product. It is not uncommon on many a bike for the electronics to be fried, even on a modern bike, and this is so cheap it is a "no brainer" Just pick the version you want. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200609174686?ssPageName= STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_4236wt_ 924 Oh yes? This sort of product should be built into EVERY bike. Man after 30 years of biking makers STILL do not get the message of what is of use in the real world. I've already got it dirty. Voltage doesn't bounce around as much. No spikes yet. I drilled and tapped two 1/4-20 holes in the old mount.Installed with the plugs on top. Two of the three thread inserts spun. I had to drill and snap the bolts. I ordered it Friday and got it today on the free shipping. Over 4' of wire from it to the battery. I checked the headlight housing and found the bottom bracket had broke in two. Did a quick weld job on it so i can keep riding. 30,000 miles. 08 XT. |

Here's the quick and dirty way I mounted mine. I intended to do a better job later, but after many months have not gotten around to making it look nice.

David, Zip ties are truly amazing. Even when I tie something down in a trailer, I often way over do it. I shrink wrapped the wires full length then put them in the split plastic ridged shrouds and used a grommet where they pass through a hole in the plastic into the battery box. I found the button head 1/4-20 1" stainless fasteners and stainless washers at Lowes. |

Ourdee, I will get around to fixing mine right this winter. I like your methods so I will probably copy you ... I even have the drill and tap and some of that split plastic in my toolbox. |

So, how is the three-phase VRR mounted in the later single-phase systems? |
