Not sure who this was, but there was a Buell rider that will no longer be riding with us. So sad.

Driver of the truck was noted as not seeing the motorcycle.

I hate seeing stuff like this, but I think it's important to see it once in a while; it serves as a stark reminder that we do is dangerous and we always need to be on our toes and expect the unexpected.

About 4 years ago next week an old guy in a minivan turned left across the road in front of me on my bicycle. I t-boned him at 24 mph and luckily only ended up with a separated shoulder. On a motorcycle I'm sure it would have been significantly worse. That is a horrible picture. I will NOT be showing that to my wife.

Here is a little more on that wreck/death: Note the 'flashing yellow' discussion on the video.

Saw this on PDX channel 2 "breaking news" yesterday.. I'm deeply saddened. the rider was 60 yrs old and was on his uly

Quote(easttroy)
motorcyclist had a green (driving through the intersection south), truck driver had a flashing yellow (turning left) and was required to yield. Truck driver is at fault in this case. Both "TURN" lanes have flashing yellow in both directions. Unquote

Thanks for the confirmation, easttroy.. we can only hope he didn't suffer after impact. lesson to us all.. ride like YOU ARE INVISIBLE in traffic, NEVER trust or assume..
gut wrenching

I live in Portland and just saw this on the news yesterday. I'm from the east coast, and although I know being on a motorcycle carries a much higher risk, I can say that I've never encountered more distracted drivers in any other area of the country.
Every time I see a teenage kid on their cell phone, I feel the urge to follow them to a stop-light and break it.
Another un-fair end to a story.
RIP.

On that topic, that driver's cell-phone record should probably be checked.
Wouldn't be the first time a driver's head was focusing on a text-message.

The other driver was 51, unlikely to be texting IMO. Doesn't make this any less tragic though. Just reinforces why I assume that everything in sight is "out to get me" and I think "what if". What's really scary is when I imagine a scenario and can't see a way out.

RIP,

I don't understand the concept of flashing yellow. They don't have that here on the east coast.
One should always ride like they were invisible. People that hit a motorcyclist always say, "I didn't see him."

Maybe a 51yr old woman wasn't texting, although I'm in my 50's I don't text but know many people who do. Maybe she was just talking on the cell phone. According to AAA talking on a hand held cell phone is as dangerous as drunken driving, as a tractor-trailer driver I see many distracted people driving erraticly and get past them and they got that damn phone in there hands. I think the penalties should be as severe as DWI and maybe less people talk and drive.

Very sad for all involved. I don't know why people jump so fast to incriminate the driver. Bikes are not that easy to determine speed and distance of an oncoming motorcycle,... and from the posts at the news page the locals have all said it is a very dangerous intersection and has had many vehicle accidents similar to this since the flashing yellows were put up.

You're right, it's not necessarily fair to immediately accuse the driver of the automobile in these situations. However, dangerous intersection or not....in fact, more-so because it is a known dangerous intersection, more attention should be paid. Motorcycles can be hard to see, which is why a driver making a turn should be looking that much harder before doing so. Motorcycle logic, I know -but c'mon.

In Japan, when someone says "I didn't see the Motorcycle", They say, "Why weren't You Looking?",

People jump to blame the driver because Michael Lahmers, the bike rider, had A GREEN LIGHT!!!!! A GREEN LIGHT!!! Capice? None of the BLAME is on him. The driver was at FULL FAULT, even in today's no one is responsible for anything society.

THis is real sad news for all.

Here in the Dallas area we also have these BULLSHIT flashing yellow lights and THEY ARE A HAZARD. They are not all over town and the ones I have to go past I will usually take a side neighbor hood short cut. We have many people who come from all over the world driving here and many of them at a variaty of ages are new drivers and are so freaking un aware of their surroundings. Like baby's driving. Its BAD. Lights like this just confuse them even more!

I have had MANY people pull out on me over the years just as this poor sole did but having the attitude that THAT ASS IS GONNA PULL OUT at EVERy cross road has saved my ass many a time.

When I bought my V Strom in 2004 it was the first motorcycle I have owned with 2 headlights. NICE AND BRIGHT! Should be safer. WRONG! People pulled out in front of me more in the first 6 months of owning the Strom it was amazing! WTF?

So I bought a YELLOW duel filiment healight bulb for the left headlight. Its an H4 just like the right bulb but 2500kelvin yellow. European looking ya know. Well ever since I put that bulb in I have had almost ZERO left turns in front of me. I did this on the Buell as well and just ran the high beam during the day with the yellow bulb. Same thing, people see you.

A fellow rider recently bought a used Strom. He had it 2 days and commented, do you have all these assholes pulling out on you on your strom? I said, use to. Now I have the yellow bulb all you guys laughed about. Well here, and I installed the other yellow bulb I had. We laughed and said he would try it. Well low and behold, he has had the bike 2 months now and NO LEFT TURNS in front of him since.

So try it. Its all about being seen. Flash your lights at the ass wipe in the turn lane as you approch. I don't mean like blink blink, I mean leave it on high. MAKE THEM NOTICE YOU!

Now days almost allcars have running lights for safety, well that has made it worse on us. Motorcycles started the light on for safety years ago. Now that cars do it too we are just another headlight. We blend now with all the cars.

Before I traded in the Strom I removed the yellow bulb and I installed in the Triumph first night I had it.

Try the yellow bulb. You will be amazed.

GOD SPEED Unknown rider.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that you are very vulnerable on a bike. Even the best can get caught out. Riding a bike is bit like playing the guitar. Anyone can do both but both can take a lifetime to master.

Bdrag, I've had a similar experience on my Uly. 3000k HID in the lowbeam, 6000k HID in the highbeam. I ride with both on most of the time and the amount of people turning in front of me is lower than typical. I never attributed it to the different colors, but you may be onto something there. I've always hooked a modulator into the stock headlight on my X1 and while I do think it increased my visibility, the change wasn't as drastic as the different colored lights on the Uly.

Of course it might not hurt that the Uly HIDs are both hooked to 55W ballasts. Even in the middle of the day, looking at that pair of headlights is like staring into the sun.

Hey thanks Jk651! Still very sad no matter how you look at it. Those yellow left turn arrows are a bad idea at any intersection. By the looks of the crash picture, I'm guessing this could have been fatal even if the Buell rider would have been driving a car instead..... Thanks.

Those flashing yellow lights are designed for folks to be able to proceed if the way is clear, rather than having to wait for a green. The problem is that so many drivers are used to "yellow means gas it" and they think they must have the right of way. They are new to lots of drivers and they can't seem to grasp the concept. This means people have to die and that sucks ass.

Why don't people have to take some kind of training when they make potentially lethal changes to traffic control systems? Seems like a good lawyer armed with some statistical evidence could force the issue and save the lives of some good people.

I feel bad for the rider and family. I hope she gets some jail time for the vehicular murder she committed. As for lights and colors of lights, I'll give anything a try. One thing I've noticed over here in Germany is to by and paint you bike to look like the police's paint scheme without the official markers. Peoples minds look for those colors and types of bikes. Maybe a BMW should get into my garage.
