As you probably know I have 1125CR with XB12SCG tail. I thought I'll sale the tail but since I crashed the bike (not to much), I started on making a little custom bike. I'm keeping the XB tail but I have a few accessories to add to, so there is not enough room anymore. So the question is: Is a nano-teck battery good for street use or not? I saw that nano-teck (from EBR) have higher CCA, which is better for my xenon HIDs (two xenon kits for hi/low lenses in fairing + two hid kits for auxiliary lights), but the capacity is almost a 1/3 of original. Should I be afraid that battery won't charge enough - I actually don't see a problem but I would like to know if someone have actual experience with those batteries? Thanks for the infos |

Believer - there's a mixed response for LiPo (or similar) batteries. One thing (and someone can correct me if i'm wrong) is that your starting CCA should be the more important factor for the battery. Total capacity, as long as your charging system is in good working order, shouldn't matter. At least as i understand it. Have you looked at the stator fix from EBR - that might be worth some $ if yours isn't 100%... Do the Nano-Teck EBR batteries have a charger that can balance the cells? I'd get a good charger if you go LiPo. Shorai has mixed reviews but is also significantly less $ than the one at EBR. I personally would try one, but might get a less expensive one w/ a good charger. If it fails you should be able to get another (different or same) for nearly the same cost as the EBR batt. my .02 - GL! rob |

Whatever you get, get a 12 cell. I run a MOTY design 12 cell in my race bike (1125 with 14.8:1 compression) with no issues. I have an 8 cell Ballistic Performance Components in my XB (street only). The only issue I have with the 8 cell is that voltage drop at start-up sometimes causes my IC to reset to zero (clock, trip odo), especially likely during cold weather - a minor aggravation. A lot of the batteries coming out have smart charge capability. The MOTY is a couple of years old and does not - the BPC is newer and does. (Message edited by stirz007 on September 10, 2012) |

I now found some much cheaper battery then ebr. It's a little bigger but the specs are quite impressive. What do you think? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ballistic-12-Cell-Lithium- Light-Weight-Motorcycle-Battery-LH-Positive-Post-/ 270959924297 |

I read a lot of negative feedback on the Ballistic batteries (so chose to avoid). I just ordered a Shorai and hope it works out well. 270cca 18Ah version. There are two models they recommend for our bikes: LFX18L1-BS12 LFX21L1-BS12 I spoke with Shawn and got a great email response that helped me pick which one to get:
quote:Hi Rob, If you ride in cold weather less than 45-50F. The LFX21 will provide better starting performance. Otherwise the LFX18L1 is plenty of power above 50F. I would not think charging would be needed unless it gets cold then a fully charged battery(14.4V) is nice. Normally 13.3-13.6V is will spin the bike over easily, and only need to charge if the resting voltage drops below 13.1V. The key to long life is to never let if drop below 12.86V. Under normal situations the bike could sit for a 2 or 3 weeks no problem, but charge if left for more than 4 weeks. And in the winter , fully charge the battery and then disconnect from the bike, and recharge in the spring before riding. Fyi a standard lead acid charger (upto 2A) would be okay, just don’t expect it to tend the battery if left on because the float mode voltage is too low. NOTE- the battery minders that have a deep cycle conditioning mode or desulfation and smart technology built in should not be used for the Shorai battery. Hope that helps, Shawn Higbee Technical Director Shorai Inc. 845 Stewart Dr. Suite D Sunnyvale, CA 94085 Office: 408-720-8821 Mobile : 414-397-2056 Fax : 408-720-1537 Email : racetech@shorai.org www.shoraipower.com
With that, since i ride most of the year, but pretty mild weather in the PNW, i chose the LFX18. I got the Shorai charger that also balances the cells. It has a plug to charge while still on the bike like i used for the OEM. I have a really nice Batteryminder which thanks to Shawn i know better than to use. Great for deep cycle batts (AGM, Gel, etc.) and used regularly if bike sat for a week+. I attribute my stock battery lasting 3 years to my Batteryminder charger. You can find the LFX18 online for 160'ish (amazon had minehttp://www.amazon.com/Shorai-Inc-Batteries-LITHIUM -BATT/dp/B007GR5E42/ref=sr_1_2?s=automotive&ie=UTF 8&qid=1349367525). dimensions to compare w/ that ballistic: GL! |

what are the negative things about ballistic batteries? I didn't found almost none. And shorai is some sort of ballistic also, isn't it? |

i bought the balistic, and no problems so far, according to directions if it drops below 6v it's toast, so to be safe i'm using a battery tender also |

How do you mean with toasted? Is there no chance to regenerate it with high impulses like any acid battery? |

if any lithium ion drops to 6v, it is considered dead, and may not be rechargeable |

OK, thanks for the info but I still don't know what to get then! I need much smaller battery for everyday use and higher CCA then original. I'm loaded with two xenon and two aux xenon. And I don't want to plug it in a tender everyday. I love nature trips where there is no electricity to plug my bike in. Please give me some good choice about the battery. Thanks |

Believer - the Shorai 21 may work well. a bit higher capacity(21AH) and cca(315CCA). Looking online at Shorai - here's the dimensions LFX21L1-BS12 model: CCA is 315 vs 270 of the 18 (model I bought). It also weighs about a pound more. Not inexpensive, i'd still recommend getting one of the Shorai chargers so you can balance the cells once in a while. GL! |

Thanks Sl33py in figured that this would be a good battery, but I really don't have that much room for it. It's almost the same size as original. |

Believer - checked your location... Your weather looks similar to mine (right now at least). I think you could probably get away with the 18AH model like i bought. Do you ride a lot in the Fall/Winter/Spring? Heated garage or not? Unless really cold i think the 18AH 270CCA LFX18L1-BS12 should work and save you the space you need. Still probably worth getting the charger with either (another $80 roughly). Kamnik looks amazing... i bet it's fantastic riding in those mountains. Do you have many paraglider pilots? (my other passion). May need to add Slovenia to my bucket list of places to visit!! GL! rob |

Yes we have quite a lot of nice mountain roads, the only problem is that the paths are old with many bumps and holes. So I often go to Croatia and Austria. Yes the winter is coming and I do also ride in winters (even if it's only o few degrees above zero). I have a garage but it's not heated. So I see you really like shorai? You think this are the best price/quality batteries? Then I'll probably take one of 18AH About paragliders, yes there are a lot of them, even I go sometimes, It's nice |

Believer - I think the technology has grown to be a great solution for us. There are a lot of vendors out there. I'm impressed by the Shorai for a couple main reasons - 1. they sponsor EBR. and 2. Balance charger. I'm a geek and use LiPo batteries a lot. Typically singles which are easy. In parallel/series it's tough to keep them balanced. A good charger is worth $$$, as it extends the life of the batteries. There are other brands, and what i'd steer you towards is obviously a good reputation of the manufacturer, and a port/connection that allows you to balance the cells. If the battery has that, and it's in your price range - get it. with your cold temps and unheated garage, you'll likely need the battery charger or some sort of process to get it to warm up for starting in near freezing temps. It doesn't get that cold in the Pacific NW where i live, so the 18AH is sufficient for me. We can get 1-2 weeks in the winter around freezing(or below), but not always. GL! |

I do also like quality so i better give some more money to get something that is good. I'll go for a shorai then with a charger. Do you thing that the quality and life time is much better then original one - which I think is very well made battery. Figo: I don't have pics at the moment, the bike is apart. I have only pics how I made it but the tail part an light is now different. When I'll get the bike together I'll post some pics, but probably not sooner than in Januar or Februar http://www.maitim.si/cr_xb.html (that are pictures how it was made) I now also have integrated turn signals with the new taillight but no pictures of it yet |
