After my third latch snapped in two in my hand for no apparent reason (other than it's made out of plastic) I said to hell with this, time for a repair. Thirty seconds with a drill, five minutes with a spool of safety wire and safety wire pliers and it's much, much better than new. Just make sure to cut the twisted strands short enough so that they don't foul anything when it's back in service.  | ||

So the wire is around the remnants of the broken plastic where it pivots on the steel pin? | ||

yeah and the bad thing is they are on backorder. I've had the bike 3 weeks, and only ran the top case.....I want the side bags on it dang it! BTW capital cycle are great to work with. | ||

Natexlh1000 nailed it - the safety wire is twisted around the pivot pin. Make sure that you have at least 3 tight twists with the wire before you snip the excess off. What a crappy, horrible excuse for a design which they should have updated years ago. I'll take a picture of the backside after work tomorrow but it's dead simple - push one side of the wire through the drilled hole, push the other side through the gap in the hinged portion and spin the safety wire pliers. $43, I don't think so. | ||

The underside  It seems to me that the plastic gets stuck on the metal pivot which is why it just snaps in two so easily. Maybe a shot of silicone spray every so often would help. At any rate, here's my cheap fix. | ||

I have had 2 long(ish) trips nearly ruined by this POS design. Finally broke down and bought the Gobi cases. Top loading and two sturdy latches per bag. Fit the Buell mounts just fine. Only the passenger pegs hit. Anyone want to buy the stock Journey cases? | ||

Knock on wood,  , but I haven't had an issue yet. What causes the breaks? I read about the weak latches early on and have been very careful not to over stuff them or treat them hard in any way. I also carry straps in case the latches fail. They obviously feel cheap but it 'seems' (???) that if we baby them they'll last. Am I living in a fantasy world? Thanks. | ||

I always have a safety strap going between the passenger grab rails and the side-case handle when I ride with the cases. If the latch breaks I don't risk losing my stuff. Also, when my last latch broke I ordered a spare. Ksc12c's $25 one is a good idea even if you haven't had one break yet. | ||

BuellerXt I have over 10,000 miles on mine, using the latches (carefully) more or less every ride, and they have not broken yet. I always have a spare strap on the bike, and on any road trip I pack a spare latch, but I haven't needed it yet... | ||

anyone use saddlebag liners for the bags, that way if the latches do break the stuff wont fall out? | ||

I have been lucky. 40 k miles and no failure. I will lubricate with some spray silicone just in case. I like your fix. |
