Greetings Friends,

I am investigating what I believe to be an abnormal temp of the battery in my Uly. The bike is an 06. The battery looks like original or a factory replacement. (it holds a charge fine) A couple of weeks ago I discovered the bike suffering from the connector 77 charging failure. (Stator ohm'd out fine) I changed out the connectors at that junction (77) I left original Voltage Regulator in place. The system began charing the battery again. After subsequent rides I have pulled the seat and tested the battery... in each case 12.9v -Prior to starting the engine today I tested the battery and read 12.9... all seems well. I went out and lapped the lake nearby (50 miles) and returned noticing a scent I'd not noticed before... which had me pull the seat looking for something warmer than it should be... I used a laser thermometer and my snout. Nothing obvious with the snout, but the laser reported that the battery was rather warm. In fact not believing my eyes, I stuck a finger on the battery..... too hot to linger a finger! That is not a happy battery. The plastic case of the batter was 175*f when I aimed the laser at it... which was quite a few minutes after switching the engine off. (so it was likely several degrees warmer than that during operation) Both terminals of the battery also read this number. Other items in the vicinity of the battery were a good 50 degrees cooler.. some *much* more than that.

May I please ask that one of you reading this, who owns a laser thermometer, point it at your battery after your engine has been running for an hour or so? Assuming your bike is not misbehaving. I would be grateful for the data.

During the reassembly of the connector 77 problem I tested voltage at the battery while idle and high R's and was not surprised or worried by the numbers I read on the multi meter. Mid range 13v while high rpm's and low to mid 12v while idle.

Oh man I don't have a laser thermometer but that sounds pretty cool. I gotta get me one of those. That and the sawzall and I'm complete.

Never put a thermometer on it, but "too hot to touch" is too hot. Sounds like you need a new battery.

What is the voltage at the battery with the bike running? If that is 12.9, that is also actually an indicator that the battery could be bad. That's low for a working charging system.

Doug,

Per your request and since I was going for a ride anyways...

124F - hottest spot on the battery, lower left (neg terminal end)
103F - inside of both frame rails near the battery
76F - outside of shady bag, ~ ambient air temp

and for giggles...

100F - front tire
111F - rear tire

Temps were taken after a 250 mile ride and immediately after the fan stopped.

I would guess that you have a short inside of your battery. Your battery voltage with the engine running and the battery at full charge should be close to 14.5V.
