here goes... bought an 04 last year, reportedly sat for 3yrs with minimal riding. ran great when i bought it, fun bike. went through 3-4 tankfuls without a hiccup. one day she ran real rough like it was only firing on one plug. limped home and hasn't started since. pulled fuel pump and filter, replaced the fuel pump filter but the fuel filter drained clear and no resistance blowing through it. new clean gas, 93oct in tank, pulled plugs, they were gapped appropriately and not too dirty but replaced anyway. still no start. wouldn't run off of ether through the intake either. pulled fuel injectors, soaked to try and clean, plugged them in and hit the starter, one injector squirted, the other didn't. cleaned again now both squirt but still bike won't start. tries but will only fire one spark or two. now she'll run on ether but won't continue. put two new injectors and new fuel line in with high hope but same problem. all hoses correct, bike is very clean, less than 5k miles on it. too proud to take it to the shop. suggestions would be great. timing? why would it change over night? if it'll run on ether/starter fluid, timing and spark should be fine. should be a fuel delivery issue. what am i missing? gotta ride... gotta ride... gotta ride!! |

I have a 2004 that gets fussy from time to time - runs rough, surges at highway speeds etc. TPS reset and idle speed adjustment is a great place to start. Check your battery and leads - I had one connection come loose and it would not start. I've heard grounding points need to be in good shape also. These bikes are apparently not very forgiving with patchy electrics. |

Fuel, spark, compression. You're missing one of them. I assume it doesn't sound radically different while cracking, so it's *probably* not compression (though it's always good to test this when troubleshooting). If it's not running on ether, I'd look at spark as the likely problem. Bad coils or a bad ignition sensor would be the places to look. If you crank with a plug pulled and grounded, does it spark properly? It's also possible, if you run out of ideas, that the ECU has failed. It's rare, but has been known to happen on occasion. |

Wanted to start this weekend but REAL rough. Initially solved (or thought) the spark issue. Early on I found the rear wire not connected to the coil well, plus clip was rusted and broke. Replaced both wires, ohm tested correctly. Still no good. Pulled front plug and grounded while I cranked. Sparked good and bike wanted to start (left back plug in) Didn't officially test the back plug. Reconnected wires with dio grease and made sure they were on tight. Next moved onto the fuel issue. As stated above, pump works, new fuel injectors and fuel line. Good squirt there. The way it sounds and half wants to run, almost as if it's trying to run on one cylinder. Heading back to check plugs and spark and compression test both cylinders. ECU failure would be a bit expensive, eh? "Sometimes it takes a tankful of fuel before you begin to think straight" |

EBR ECU might be cheaper than from HD. Check that its progrem is suitable for you engine, exhaust, etc. |

I'm not buying an ECU just to parts-swap and hope for the best. I've got fuel, spark, and compression. Wants to start and barely runs while quickly blipping the throttle but won't stay running or idle. Anyone have any luck with ECMSPY? Understand it's a free download. $50 cable. Cheaper than a new ECU. "One of these days... POW!! Right in the kisser!" |

Check that other plug you did not test officially. try to start it with spraying some brake cleaner into the manifold (maybe with unplugged wires to the injectors) Don't give it up! |

Plugs and wires removed, rechecked, plugged in tight, grounded and both spark strong and consistent. Got spark, got fuel, got compression...only thing left is timing. |

Not really, have you looked at bike with ECM spy to see what your AFV is and where your TP is actually set? Timing almost never an issue and won't suddenly change on these bikes. If TP is off it will be looking at an incorrect area of map while trying to start---and on an Xb TP governs EVERYTHING in your injection. And from sitting your fuel pump maybe clogged enough to run fuel pressure down. Have you hooked a gauge up to pump? Should be 55 IIRC and not loose pressure with key off. |

Helpful info, thanks. Best I can tell ECMspy used to be free now they want $71 for full version. Just got initial version (apparently demo only) downloaded but haven't hooked up yet. What's your experience with it? Don't have a pressure gauge for injectors but they squirt 10ft across garage! The difference between a Corvette and a Porcupine is that on a porcupine the pricks are on the outside... |

FUEL PUMP!! No pressure. Pushing at only 5psi. Don't know why they squirted when initially tested and cleaned. New one ordered but hoping to get lucky with the current one and save close to $400. |

She lives!!! Thanks to a fellow on the forum, sold me a fuel pump he had. Initial install and it didn't work. Enter frustration again. Pulled it out (getting good at this by now) and the lead wire had come off. Re-install and she fired right up. Little idle adjustment and had a great ride. Time to break this bike in finally. '04 with only 2k miles on it... "If you see me don't bother waving 'cause it's too late. I was that blur that just passed you..." |
