Had it installed for two days now if anything felt like i lost some grunt. Maybe takes more time for computer to relearn? Before i could hammer it n 1st and the front would come up on me and I would have to let out on it. Now, not so much. Its not about gettin the front to come up but feels like across the power band i have lost some torque. Maybe just in my head?

Perhaps not in your head.
The EPA makes the bikes already lean as hell.
Letting in more air may very well lean it out further.

Personally, when I added my K&N, I didn't notice really any change other than more honk from the intake.

I'm thinking we are both in the market for EBR race brains.

Make that 3 for the EBR ECM. I did the breather mod & installed a K&N & I have noticed no real difference.

I'm not a Guru on the fuel injection systems on these bikes. However I am a mech pretty well versed on fi systems on cars.

I dont understand how changing a air filter will make the bike go lean? Maybe its different on these bikes.

Thats the whole purpose of a O2 sensor. Once operating temp is reached (closed loop) the ecm will start using the sensors available to it. If the bike is set to run a certain fuel map and it is lean, as soon as closed loop sets in and it reads lean from the o2 sensor it should correct for it by adding more fuel.

Could be the noise. I may be associating a certain level of noise with with a certain spot in the power band. Now that its louder now faster I may not be where I feel like I should be in the band. I should find out this afternoon. She dont know it but I'm taking the long way around home that will allow me to put the spurs to her....

I am no expert either, but I do know the ECMs on cars are far more sophisticated than the ones on many bikes. With a narrowband O2 sensor, it is up to the ECU to determine the ratio based on what the O2 sensor is seeing. If the ECU isn't programmed well or isn't advanced enough to allow for more sophisticated programming, the adjustments made are not always ideal. That said, I don't think a K&N (assuming you are using the stock pipe) would present enough extra airflow to stump the ECM once it is in closed-loop. But again, I'm no expert.

Buewulf, that makes sense and very well could be whats going on.

I should have been more clear, Its 2008 xb12xt with a Hawk Performance exhaust.

I'll give it a few more days, then there might be a cheap used k+n filter for sale. LIGHTLY used!

Think i figured out why i thought i was losing power. It quits pulling around 4k. Goes flat, but noise increases. The i remember guys talkin about flat spots in their power band. put th stocker back in and all is well.

The breather mod DOES work. I did it on both my 06 and 2010 bikes and noticed an instant change. You will not notice a power gain but you should notice a smoother idle because the engine is no longer trying to burn oil/water vapour. But that, of course, will only be noted if your bike is running right in the first place.

I agree that the breather mod helps RE: keeping crap out of the engine. I run mine to a catch can. I didn't notice any gain in power & mine has always idled smoothly.

There is a VERY major difference between car and Buelly FI systems. Buewulf touched on the difference but there is more to it than the O2 sensor. All cars will either utilize a MAF (Mass AirFlow) sensor or a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) system. MAF directly measures the air intake of the engine, MAP compares intake manifold pressure compared to barometric pressure to calculate the amount of air being drawn into the engine. The info from those sensors combined with TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) lets the ECM calculate very accurately how much fuel the engine needs and the narrow band O2 sensor lets the engine fine tune the fuel flow even better.

Our Buells don't use either of those sensors. It's a much more basic system with a predetermined fuel map based on a stock system and average barometric pressure at a particular altitude (1000 ft ASL I believe). The ECM then looks at the TPS and RPM and calculates how much fuel the engine SHOULD need for that particular throttle/ RPM combination (and unless you've tuned your ECM it assumes you have a stock bike at 1000ft). Once the engine reaches operating temperature it then uses the broadband O2 sensor to determine if the engine is generally on average, rich or lean. It then enriches or leans out the entire fuel map by a certain percentage to compensate compensate for that. It allows the FI system to compensate for the altitude that you live at basically, and maybe one minor tuning mod, but it's range of adjustment is fairly narrow, and uniform across the entire fuel map. That is why when we do major changes, or live at extreme altitudes (or both) we need to tune the ECM. It simply doesn't have the ability to tune the way a car FI system does.

All cars will either utilize a MAF (Mass AirFlow) sensor or a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) system.

Assuming all cars were made after 1982.

On pre EFI vehicles with.....you know.....carburetors, changing from a stock air filter to an open flow filter can absolutely cause a power loss. More air in has to be balanced with more air out, as well as through the engine. Along with this more fuel was needed in the form of larger jets.

There was this simple mod that was done by many "semi-badass motorheads" back in the 70's to make a stock V8 sound meaner. They would flip the stock air cleaner cover over to let it suck more fresh air. Most cars did not run better, but most drivers swore they did because it sounded beastly when they were standing in their four barrel a lot more often. An intake system would have to be really restricted to make it actually run better. They were loud honkin' intake noises though!

If they coupled the intake mods with exhaust mods they could bring increases in horse power and torque.

All true. One point is that car EFI systems have been around and sorted for over 20 years now and mechanical ones before that. They even had it on the 109 in WW2. Bikes are another matter though and they are still perfecting the art on some bikes even now. That and a, given how they heat and cool, old air cooled V-Twin it is not easy.
