I have a three day trip coming up which should cover 4-500 miles. A buddy of mine is flying out and we're going head up into the mountains. I've been looking at my Pirelli Scorp trails wondering if I have enough rubber left, and while neither tire is quite at the wearbar yet, I'm really not digging the idea of having my bunghole puckered the whole trip wondering if I'll run out of rubber in the middle of nowhere. I was thinking I'd take my other bike but decided at the last moment for a variety of reasons I want to take the Uly. So, I called a local shop and they don't have any Pirellis in stock, but they DO have Dunlop Roadmaster 2s in stock and get them mounted in time. Apparently they have an equivalent Michelin in stock (Sport Tourer) but I don't have that model handy. I need to pull the trigger tomorrow if I want these on the bike on time. So, simple question. I searched but cannot find much info. Anyone year running the Roadmasters, and if so, a good tire for the bike? Good or bad points? Thanks. Ski | ||

Ski, don't make the mistake of putting non matching front and rear tires on your bike. I did that and it was a huge mistake. I had roads smarts on the front and a Shinko Raven on the rear. The handling went to hell in a hand basket due to the different shape of the tires. The turn in was really off. I finally made the change back to matching front and rear tires and it makes an enormous difference in the bikes handling. Even two Shinko ravens would have been better. Having mismatched tires on your motorcycle makes for a very gnarly ride. I will never do that again. The road masters are a good tire but I don't care for them for more aggressive riding. If you are just touring on this trip then those should be fine. I wouldn't take them on anything more aggressive than a graded dirt road. I'm not sure which Michelin sport tourers you're talking about but I would lean that way if you expect to ride fairly hard. The roadmaster tires seem to have a harder rubber than what I am used to. Ski- the Michelin Pilot Roads (hopefully II's or III's) are their sport touring tires and are very good. They wear very well. I've got about 7500 miles on a set now and they're holding up well. That said, I don't like the handling quite as well as the Pirelli Scorpion Syncs, but many Uly riders actually like them better. | ||

The scorpion syncs are not to be trifled with if worn, once the tread is gone, the carcass is pretty much gone also. They are literally paper thin, and it won't take much to blow a hole in them (and you won't be able to use any of the on the road "patch and limp back" approaches). DAMHIK. Maybe the trails are beefier, I don't know. I mixed a badly worn and age hardened 170 series dunlop with a front scorpion sync to get home... beggers shouldn't be choosers... and the handling ranged from "unsettling" to "terrifying". That being said, I mixed types on my M2 several times with no problems. Metzlers and Dunlops mostly. And remember the tire I put on the Uly was the wrong size, was age hardened, and had a big old flat spot in the middle. Hopefully the Michilin is a PR2 or PR3, great tires. If so, I would get the new rear, put it on, and see how it handles. If it handles OK, you are OK. If not, go around the block and back to the shop and buy the new matching front as well. Keep the old front for somebody still running the pirelli's, or for when you go back. The fronts are typically much cheaper anyway... | ||

I just got a set of PR3's, haven't had the chance to mount them yet, but from what everyone says they are the bomb. | ||

Thanks, all. This must be my lucky day. The first dealer wanted $515 for a set of the Dunlops, OTD including mounting. The second guy I called is way closer, and they're having a sale on the Michelin PR3s, 120 for the front, 147 for the rear,plus tax, and 30 per wheel to mount. So I can go with the PR3s with confidence based on your feedback. | ||

You check the wheel bearings for wear. Make sure they remove and refit the rear wheel without twisting the belt and torque it up in the right way. | ||

Good deal. Haven't had the PR3's but have had the PR2's and loved them. Not a big Dunflop fan, I think you did well. I replaced the PR2's with Pirelli Scorpion Trails and love the Trails a LOT! Not a whole lot different than the PR2's on the street but much better off pavement. | ||

For riding in our winters, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find a better road option than the PR3's, so great choice and a super deal. Spectacular in the wet and very grippy in the corners. I just finished a road trip and had a brand new rear PR3 standing by for replacement on return as the current set eclipsed the 10,000 mile mark - - and wouldn't you know it, still have a few thousand miles left on the rear ! !, and much, much more left on the front. And I'm not easy on the throttle (most of the time). . . Of course, YMMV, but I don't think you'll be disappointed in the paved road performance of these tires. | ||

I put the Dunlop Roadsmarts on my Uly and they handle great. I wanted to go with the D616's but they had to be special ordered and the dealer had the Roadsmarts in stock | ||
