Just bought a 2001 S3T and living in OH it might be a couple of months before I'm even able to ride the bike for the first time. While I'm waiting I thought I'd try and get a couple of questions answered. The bike only has about 800 miles on it right now, and when the bike was delivered they told me the fluids had all been changed and was really nothing left to do until the 2,500 mile mark. I was going over the bike just checking things out and noticed that when checking the oil, it didn't even touch the dipstick. I read the manual and it says to check the engine when it's fully warmed up, so I'm wondering if this is going to make that big of a difference when checking it hot, or should I doubt that they really did change the oil and do it again. Also how many miles should be on the bike before I can go to a full synthetic oil like Mobil 1. If I decide to go with a few upgrades I was wondering what's the first ones to go with on the Buell as far as performance goes. I really don't want a loud pipe but wouldn't mind a little more sound than the stock system. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me. Mike |

Congrats and welcome to Buell. Yes, there can be a big difference in oil level cold bike to warmed up bike(don't ask how I know this!) As far as mods, you'll get lots of opinions there. I would go with the Buell factory race kit if it was me. Ride to the edge! Dave Iowa HD/Buell (Buell Cycle Center) |

I made the mistake of not running the engine last spring before checking the oil. Prior to parking it for the winter I made sure that the oil was topped up and in the spring it was low by about 1 liter. WELL, After running the bike with the seat off for a while the dipstick finally went into orbit spewing a stream of oil. Learned that one the hard way!!!!!!!! |

hard to go wrong with the Buell Race kit . . . other setups may equal or surpass it, may look better or worse, but none have such a high degree of chance of working well on your bike without a lot of trial and error . . . . always an adventure starting a dry-sump engine after it's sat for a while . . . . . |

You can go with Mobil 1 right away. I did. Love it. |

I have to agree with Bomber-the race kit components have all been tested together to bring about the best results together. When you mix and match without a dyno run you're kinda on your own. Nothing wrong with going with someone else's package, as long as you know the end result...otherwise it's a crap shoot. |

I'd have to say the race kit.The only pipe that compares to it and beats it is the Force pipe and if you don't like loud its not for you.I've had the Vance & Hines muffler and it was OK but if you want to really feel the difference a full pipe is the way to go. |

Thanks everyone for the info: It looks like the race kit is the way to go. Next question is, what's included in the kit, what type of HP and torque increase are most people getting from it, and finally what is the cost and where can I get the kit from? |

I switched to Mobil 1 20W50 synthetic this summer while on my way back home from the 20th Anniversary. When I got back home I also went with 75w90 synthetic gear oil in the primary. I find that the enging runs cooler and the gearbox shifts smoother. |

Mikexup, Check out ebay, sometimes they come up pretty cheap. I got a ceramic coated header, and the Buell race exhaust really cheap from a friend. Shop around before you go to the dealership, thats all the advice I can give. Newf, thanks for the info, I have to change all the fluids in my bike, and was wondering how the synthetic stuff worked out. Brian |

Mikexup, The race kit consists of a race header, race muffler, race ECM and a CF "ham can" style air filter system. As with any change to the ECM, be sure to have the TPS reset by the dealer. The kit will net 5-8 HP, BUT improves the "drivability" and has a smoother torque curve. Some things to keep in mind with the S3T: 1) You can't keep the stock fairing lowers with the air filter provided (without modification) 2) If you are thinking of running the X1 lower chin piece, get the X1 race kit 3) You will end up with the stock air filter support sticking out with the race air filter on the bike, but you can change the front mount to the X1 one to get over this Don in Phoenix 2002 Buell S3T - stock except for K&N in the air box and a Power Commander |

Mikexup welcome to this world!! and to give ya a big welcome I got ya a really good deal!!! I have an incomplete race kit for an S3. all it is missing is the air cleaner set up. (probably rob by the race team at some stage or something) otherwise it is brand new in the box. header ,ecm, muffler and all parts and instructions for assembly. those 3 parts separtely would be $939.90 minus bad web discount that would come to $845.91 I can sell this for $700 plus shipping. the whole system was $1219 minus bad web discount $1097. so if your interested or anybody else. I need to move this thing out. Brian Tilley hd/buell 704-872-3883 buckinfubba@hotmail.com |

Brian, Haven't even had a chance yet to drive the bike around the corner so I'm not sure at this time what modifications I will want to make to the bike if any. I will keep you in mind though and if something comes up and I do want to make the modifications, I'll be sure and give you a call. Does this cancel your warranty when you put these items on the bike? |

This is not a "race mod", but I just found an X1 chin fairing. I'd like to put it on my S3T and I'm trying to figure out the mounting locations. The bike has no fairing lowers on it. |

5liter, You can mount it with the same brackets that the X1 uses - depending on the exhaust you have, of course. If you have the Buell race exhaust, you need the X1 race exhaust for the right clearance. |

02buells3t Thanks for the info. Now I need to find part numbers for the brackets.. The exhaust is stock so the clearance is no problem. |

Bads1 - Yeah, you are right. Must be brain fade. You use the X1 kit if you want to keep the fairing lowers on the S3T, not for the chin piece (X1 kit has no CF air filter in it). Duh!! 5liter - Modesto Buell has added the chin piece in the past, I'm sure they have the numbers needed. Dave should be able to get the numbers and order up whatever you need, too. |
