Whitworth are Britsh (old) standard thread systems. They have a rounded crest and root. Here is a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Standard_Whit worth wont work..... |

Wow. You really take it for granted how easily we can get interchangeable parts in current times. That wiki article made my head ache. I was a "proud" owner of a $300 1981 Olds cutlass at one time. I had to change out the water pump and found that biach was metric and also inches. I had every tool my dad and I owned out on the driveway. It actually had studs that were inch threads on one side and metric on the other. I guess they made big piles of engines at a time and they were in inches until they ran out? That little 4.3 engine had no power at all but took every bit of abuse I gave it. Sent it to the junkyard with a rusted through frame and it still didn't burn a drop of oil. |

Aw the 80's when the USA was supposed to switch to the metric system.......... we would get prints for parts to machine in metric and inch systems from IBM all the time. |

Carrol Smith's book on fasteners is my thread bible. Highly recommended if you are afflicted with British bikes and Buells as I am. |

Why did I ever buy a hundred dollar car I knew when I got it that it wouldn't get me far You put five hundred dollars in and there you are With a six hundred dollar, hundred dollar car You can tap a Wentworth to the next larger size SAE, as long as they're both 24 threads per inch.
