As some of you may have read, about 2 weeks ago my XB9SR's belt snapped. It rained all week here in Austin, TX so I didnt have much of a chance to ride it after I picked it up (the gave me a free upgrade to a 2004 drive train - my dealer rocks!) Lo and behold, the heavens shined down on us yesterday and we had INCREDIBLE weather here (not trying to rub it in). I get up, go warm ol' Pepe up (thats my bikes name) and start doing a pre-ride inspection. Thats when things go bad...... There was OIL/GREASE all over the swingarm on the side that the belt is on. I mean it was thick and nasty, didnt look like much if any got on the tire, but that is a damn precarious place to have oil leaking from the bike. I hop on Pepe and we go down to Central Texas HD, where all my work and service is done. I have the guy behind the counter check it out and he was like "Holy Crap, that cant be good!". They took it in immediately, took the cover off and what did they find? The seals behind the pulley did not go in right. The wrench who did the work pulls me aside and explained that when he put it back together for the belt, it had no instructions on the seals in the service manual. It took about 4 hours to get the bike fixed up and semi cleaned. Again, they loaned me the XB12R.I headed out to go see Eric Bostrom (racer for Team Ducati - being sponsored by Duc of Austin) at the local duc shop. Nice guy, really nice bikes, wish I had more time to pick his brain about stuff for when I go to track days. At the end of the day, I take the 12R back to the shop, my bike is ready, and I notice there is still just a slight bit of oil on the swingarm. I tell myself its probably just residue, but damn if Im not going to keep a steady eye on this. If anybody is reading thinking - why should I buy a Buell if this is the problems they have.. This was not a defect in the product, only in the part of the technician who did the work. I would like to say I'm not upset about it, but lets face it... that little mistake could have really caused some damage if they grease/oil got on the tire while I was cruising down the highway or leaning over in a turn. Cen Tx HD is a great dealership and they really go above and beyond to take care of their Buell riders. A couple of the folks that work there are going to be racing them this year. Should be great to see! --Ride safe ya'll |

Great report. I actually thought about making the trip to Austin (5 hours) just to see the EBoz. He's my man this year in AMA Superbike. Question... Why did they need to remove ANY seal in order to swap pulleys? Anyone? Sounds very questionable to me. |

My thought was the bike had the old bearings and decided to upgrade to the replacements when I read his post. Wheels off so why not? Or possibly since the wheel was off the dealer decided to play it safe and replace the bearing with new anyways just for longevity sake. |

Sorry - my bad. The seals were behind the front pulley for the belt. I went from an 03 belt system to an 04 belt system. I still have the orange bearing seals on the wheel. edited by Austinrider on January 18, 2004 |
