If they're like my Shelby-Dodge cars (and I suspect that's the case), there is no VIN correlation to the "bike number" in the series. Basically they build the cars (bikes) in a batch, and once they have "a bunch" sitting in the yard waiting to ship, they install the numbered bits. For my cars, that would be the engine number plaque and dash plaque. Random install. First car in line gets the first set in the box, and so on. I have VIN lists from the Shelby plant in Whittier, CA, from '86 through '89, that lists every VIN and the car number that was assigned to it. While no rhyme or reason went into which plaques went into what car, they did track it internally. I don't know if Buell tracked these things, but if they did, it wasn't "official" or "documented" through HD-net or other means. Perhaps 1313 or Dave or Court could shed some light as to whether there was tracking involved for the stripe bikes, as well as the Millenium bikes? |

Actually pulled some more strings at a local HD dealer and they were able to get me the print out from records where it was ordered. It shows it is a racing stripe model and in () is (081) . I have no idea if that is the actual number out of 350 or if that is the code to show it is a race stripe when ordered. I got the owners name from some warranty work that was done in 01. No luck contacting him yet, but...he lives in East Weymouth, MA. Phone number I have is no good. |

I would suggest having your gas cap engraved and call it a done deal 81 out of 350 sounds plausible to me. |

I think...and this is from memory...that (081) is the color code or model code... |

I am thinking that that code is just that, a code for paint color or something. |

Ratbuell I think you are right about 081 being the color code. Couple of weeks a go a found 2 racing stripes without numbered gas cap. When I asked a badweb member to check the VIN numbers, bouth of them gave the same results: racing stripe #081 Here is a list of numbered racing stripes in europe: http://clbres.servhome.org/anglais/index_ang.html A french buell racing stripe owner tries to locate the numbered racing stripes. It seems that # 081 is owned by a italian (see list) (Message edited by Dutch x1 on August 08, 2012) |

Bringing this back to the top. I did find out my bike is a REAL racing stripe bike, but have been unable to contact original owner (deceased) to verify the small details. I do NOT believe that the 99 bikes had numbered caps though... Further proof of that: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Rare-Limited-Editio n-1999-Buell-Lightning-X1-Blue-Stripe-W-Hi-Perf-Ex tras-Shelby-/120985035036?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=i tem1c2b45211c I am still looking for some bodywork to repaint back original. |
