Running late this morning, 33 miles on the reserve trip meter('04 XB12R). She dies... After pushing her for 1/4 mile to the gas station, I fill her. She only took 3.3 gallons! Where's my other .4 gallons!?... She started right up. Tried to run her 3300 rpm's for as long as I could on the remaining 20 miles in. I don't need to take her to the dealership or anything do I? Nothing needs resetting or recalibration? Anyone? Buckin', Dave?

My '97 Cyclone won't take the full 4 gallons unless I block up the side stand to level the bike. I was baffled when I first got the bike to be hitting reserve at 100 miles and then only taking 2.5 gallons to fill. Leveling up the bike gets a LOT more fuel in...

If I have traveled more than 15 miles after the fuel light comes on and it starts counting past 15 or 20 miles and I have not found a gas station... I begin to get a feeling of panic... that is a small reserve... and I am too old to be pushing a bike to a gas station... cause I ain't leaving it set and walking off. I have read it is not good to run a fuel pump dry... and the ECM starts playing with air fuel mixture trying to keep all running... so I have read... the first few miles after gassed up... it will run strange until it can start to properly balance the mixtures correctly again... maybe not worded technically correct... but an attempt!!!

I have at times held the XB up level off the stand to fill to max... when I know I might be pushing the envelope of range before fuel light illumination... which is consistently 110 miles... +-about 3 miles! When fueled on the side stand.

There's a lip inside the tank. Can it be filled above that, or will that go into the overflow?

You fill to that lip... (the manual says to not fill past that point) beyond that I am pretty sure it is vented or set up for over flow... a charcoal canister I THINK on Peoples Republic Of California models.

I've gone 35 miles with the reserve light on, and 4 miles completely empty. It was a long walk.

Never ran out on a bike though. Well, that's not true, I ran out on a dirt bike once, but there wasn't a trip meter, speedo or any sort of gage on that particular motorcycle. It started life as a 250 street/dirt bike and ended it a few years after the car port fell on it (after two feet of snow fell on the car port) as a dirt bike. Yes, I WILL ride anything.

I did 47 miles on the light once. But my light goes on right before 2.6-2.7 gallons. I filled up with 3.3 gallons. So maybe it was a 2.5 day for the fuel light.

When I first got my M2, and thinking that the on/off/reserve position was the same as my sportster, I rode from North Phoenix to Kayenta, AZ (275+ miles) thinking I hadn't yet hit reserve. Of course, I was on reserve the whole time and just lucky I got such good gas mileage.

I only fill it just to the lip if I know that I'm going to ride for at least another .5 gallon. I know if I don't keep riding the gas evaporating will cause overflow. I ride with the belief that the constant vibration and quick reduction in fuel level prevents that but I could just be deluding myself.

I have ran out of gas many occasions. My personal record is 52 miles after the light has came on. Then it took 3.4 gallons, after I coasted at least 2 miles.

Here is my take on the light and the tank. The sensor for the light and the pickup for the injectors are in the rear of the tank. I have a 4 mile downgrade going to work. I have noticed that most of the time the light comes on either on a downgrade or stopping and starting in traffic.

My commute is 42 miles one way and doing 4 days is a push for me at 168 miles. But I really want to do 168.

In my situation, I always fill it past the neck. Haven't had any problems. I usually run at least 40 miles a run.

I saw a new HD option that had a LED gauge that mounted on the gas cap. Wish Buell had that or a slightly larger tank!
