Hey guys! Help! I have been getting a "historical" error code 21 for exhaust lately. This is the first time I have seen it since I put a D&D muffler on the bike. It runs like it is missing a little and I can't tell if it is due to the exhaust or fuel. I've had the muffler on for a few years and it used to run smooth. Any ideas? |

Ahh, don't really know what to say. My '01 X-1 service manual doesn't list a Code 21. The list goes straight from Code 16 to Code 23. If you are counting flashes, are you sure 21 is the correct number? FWIW, Code 16 refers to battery voltage, and Code 23 involves the front injector. |

And about the miss: If it has been a while since a TPS reset, or new plugs, or plug wires, ect, I would look there first. |

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the error code is showing on my Centurion diagnostic tool. I also looked in my service manual, but like you said... I have noticed some carbon blow-by at the elbow and muffler connections in the exhaust. I am going to go back through them. I just replaced the plugs; wires are 2yrs old. I do have to check the TPS. |

Re-tightened exhaust connections. Ran tests for coil, fuel pump, injectors- all passed. Re-set TPS and AFV. Set warm idle to just bounce off 1100rpm. Still throwing the mysterious "Error 21" code, but she runs A LOT better. |

Glad it now runs better. Based on my own (Very limited, and remember, this advice is worth what you are paying for it) experience, What was the AFV before you changed it? If much above 100, you may be developing an intake leak. If much below 100, something in the fuel system. Once, I had a slight miss, and the AFV was in the low 90's - high 80's. Did an injector check, and found the rear injector was 'drooling' a bit. That extra fuel was skewing the 02 sensor into telling the ECM to lean the mixture, causing the miss. |
