Greetings!

I hate to introduce myself with a plea for help, but I'm afraid that's what I need to do.

My 2002 Blast has a few weird problems. For starters, the bike will not turn over at all. All electrical components of the bike work when the ignition is in the on position, but when I press the start button nothing good happens. When I try to start the bike, an electronic whirring noise seems to be emitted from the fuse box area. The noise sounds like some piece of science fiction equipment trying to power up for like 2 seconds.

If I put jumper cables on the battery, it will start fine after charging for about ten minutes. I don't believe it makes that science fiction noise either. However, after just a minute or so, the bike begins to idle very roughly and it sounds like it is on the verge of dying.. It sounds so bad that its amazing that it even manages to continue to run at all. If I rev the engine a bit it runs and sounds fine. After I cut the engine, the bike refuses to turn over again and goes back to doing what I described in the preceding paragraph.

One clue that may be pertinent is the boot. The boot caused me some trouble about 6 weeks ago and I'm sure that the thing isn't exactly 100% and needs to be replaced.

Again, I'm sorry to introduce myself with baggage, but I need my bike and I have very little idea what could be wrong with it.

Thanks Buell people,
-Greg

Your battery is probably dead, 10 minutes won't recharge the battery enough, and the bike isn't capable of charging the battery at idle.

Fully charge your battery, try again, if issues persist, take the battery to Autozone or similar, and have them do a load test.

Thanks Froggy. I was thinking that the battery could be the culprit. I didn't mention that I first broke down about 60 miles from home. I jumped the bike off in a parking lot and managed to barely ride it back home. Toward the end of the ride it was idling terribly at stoplights.

Start with battery, since that is obviously knackered. Once it is charged and spins the motor, if it still idles poorly, we can keep peeling the onion from there.

Do not get a battery you need to add fluid too. Sealed battery is a must, as it lays on the side.

I replaced the battery with a Duralast that I got from Autozone. I hadn't seen your post Froggy, so I ended up with an unsealed battery.

After replacing the battery, the bike began trying to turn over but would not crank. I inspected the boot and found a large crack in it. I duck taped the crack and tightened the clamp around it and I got it to fire up. It ran normally.

I know this isn't a long term fix, but it might hold me over for a few days until the new boot arives.

Thanks guys
