Very neat man! Yeah, I had an issue with my oil tank once It was the first night of running wheelie bars and i forgot to keep checking the strut (adjustable) and it started lowering itself each launch until the tire was rubbing on the tank, evenutally (total of 8 runs from start to leak) burned/rubbed a hole in the tank. Lesson learned. I now check the strut every other pass and I also have a spare tank sitting at the house IN CASE But this one that you've built is really quite cool. Yeah, its not the prettiest thing, but who cares, is it a show bike? OK THEN! YOU MADE IT! That is so awesome brother! |

Yeap. That was my main issue. The leaks out of those damn plastic/rubber grommets. They turned rock hard and never sealed. I tried threading some Brass NPT fittings but th holes were slightly too large and the threading leaked as well. But also, when I find something proper I'm going to weld a heat sinc fins on the back side. If I find something that will work, I'll cut a hole and weld double sided heat sinc so the oil cools with even more surface area. Most of the welds are actually pretty small, until I got to the bottom shaped plate. That was 6062 alloy, and everything else was 5052 alloy. I could not get them to flow into each other. I used 4 sticks of filler rod for just that back plate... and 4 sticks on the rest of the box |

A bit of grinding and polishing will pretty that thing right up. |

you cant grind aluminum welds. They lose all strength. I'd have to grind them flat, then go back and weld them all smooth again. more work than I care to do. Aluminum welds must retain their original surface tension in the bead. |

"I used 4 sticks of filler rod for just that back plate... and 4 sticks on the rest of the box" Material fitup ( no gaps or overhanging edges)is the key to nice welds on thin material. "you cant grind aluminum welds. They lose all strength." Not true so long as the weld (with proper penetration) isn't ground down below the base metals surface. |

I clamped all the edges. There was no gaps as I would pin all the edges with a Tack, then go around with a body hammer making sure everything was tightgapped. Also this was my first aluminum welding attempt on my new Tig. The problem with the backplate was its different surface cohesion... or perhaps different melting temperatures... Either way, I just took a ride on the bike. Happy to say no leaks! And its pretty neat to feel the box heat up, so you know that oil is tranfering heat! haha Its the simple things in life. |

WMSE200. 200 amp AC/DC tig. Only thing I dont absolutely love about it is no variable AC Frequency. Set at 60hz. thanks BiB! I thought so too... Also... the swing arm is next... Evil evil.. Oddly enough the one leak this tank has after riding is a seeping out of the welds around the fill tube..... Strange. Guess I overfilled. (Message edited by foximus on July 19, 2012) |

Nice work on small area. The only way you could clean that up would be to jig it up on a x/y/z/u table, butt weld same material, and work the heat until you're satisfied with the burn. Then transfer that data to your tank weldments. |

Maybe not the prettiest but you made it yourself and the next one will proly be better. Kudos. My Combo/tig won't do aluminum but I bought it when I had to do a crash repair on a Sable so I wasn't concerned at the time. What a shame. I'd like to give an oil tank a shot. I mentioned doing fins on the back to dissapate heat in another post |
