Riding home from work I lost all throttle control & after tearing into it on the side of the road I discovered the throttle body shaft had broken in half. Trying to see if anyone knows of someone making the shaft, don't feel like being raked over the coals by HD and having to buy the whole throttle body assembly for $500. I did a search and found a few posts but no word back from anyone. |

Troy- Badwebber "Tootal" had a bunch of them made up and was selling them for $75 each; they are stronger than the originals. His profile is here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/boar d-profile.cgi?action=view_profile&profile=tootal-u sers He posted back in March of this year that he still had them for sale. PM him and hopefully he'll get back in touch with you. |

+1 on Tootal! I (got the shaft)back in May. When you compare old vs new you won't understand why the original wasn't that way to begin with. Add great customer service and it makes for a repair I'm sure I won't have to do again. |

I noticed that posters above have 2006 and 2007 bikes. Was the problem corrected on the 2008's or is it lurking in all of them? Thanks. Impressive work, Tootal! |

2008-up have ball bearings in the throttle body and a different shaft; apparently there hasn't been any problem with breakage. |

Anyone have a spare throttle body shaft they are willing to part with? Haven't heard from anyone from the site that I contacted about the shaft. |

Troy, I answered your e-mail and wondered why I never heard back. Check your spam file, I've heard some of my e-mails have ended up there for some reason. Anyway, as mentioned, I have them for $75.00. I just modified a bunch of them to work for all years up to 2008. I had a couple of X1 guys use them too. I just had a 2006 Uly owner tell me my 06 shaft had the tps pin in the wrong position so he must have a late 06 build that had gone to the 07 design. Due to this I decided to make all the shafts the same and usable across the board. Try Private Messaging me again or check out your spam file and see if I'm there. |

Troy, Try one of Tootal's. I believe it to be of a superior design and an upgrade. I did. |

Got your message Tootal, you are no longer Spam to me! Thanks again, feels like hell having great weather & no bike to ride. Plan on having it up & running after work. I have only 28K for miles on the bike. Had a lot of problems with her lately though. 77 connector melted so I hard wired it. Then a spark plug went bad after only 4K. Rear bearing went bad after 3K, & that's with the new 2010 wheel. And now the TB shaft. Luckily I could fix it all so all is well. |

Hey Tootal, how can I tell which TB shaft I have in my 06? I bought one of your earlier shafts I believe but want to make sure it's going to work when it comes time to use it. Can you tell if I gave you a VIN #, or a build date?? Thanks. |

No, I don't know what build date they changed. If you have never set "true zero" on the tps sensor then maybe this would be a good time to do it? If you pull the sensor off you will see the tps pin sticking through the shaft. It will be parallel with your butterfly if it's an 06. If it's perpendicular to the butterfly then it's the 07 design. According to Treadmarks there are two orange dots on top of the sensor if it's an 07. I can neither confirm or deny! Go to this link and if yours looks like mine then it's an 06. If you've never set true zero then follow the procedure on the link. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=56 74982#post5674982 |

Thanks guys. This is great information. Tootal, hopefully I won't be asking you to find me a 2007 TB shaft! I'll keep my fingers crossed. |

If you aren't sure, send the one back and I'll exchange it for a multi year shaft. It sounds like all you need to do is pull the air cleaner cover off and see if there's two orange dots on top of the tps sensor. If not, you're good. If so, let me know! |

I would strongly urge everyone to do this mod as a preventative measure. The oem design is weak- plain and simple. Tootal's design is very robust and well made. Well worth the money and time investment. I expect various things to (eventually) break on any motor vehicle. I would never expect to break a throttle shaft. When it fails it causes instant shutdown. If you're in traffic, too bad. If enough people reported these failures to the NTSB there would be an investigation and probable recall. |

^ that might be a good idea, mine broke when I was on a trip. That failure is one in which you can't fix on the side of the road. I had the bike towed to a hotel, and the next day had to trailer my bike home (240 miles round trip). Neither myself nor my travel companion were happy. |

Is Tootal prepared for "the run" of just-in-casers buying new shafts? I've wanted to buy one but always felt compelled to hold off due to low production numbers and the number of people who genuinely needed one should have taken precedence over my personal parts stock pile for the just-in-case box. |

Tootal - I have a 2007 and would like to keep one on hand - If you have any interest is doing a run for us "just in case guys" let me know and I'll buy one. Otherwise I'll let your inventory intact for those in dire need. |
