Decided to take advantage of the beautiful day we are having here in Austin today. Changed the fluids on my bike, saddled and headed out to one of my favorite twisty roads. I get about 5 miles from my house, Im sitting at a stop light. Light turns green, I go. Shift from 1st to 2nd and I hear "POP". Now, all of a sudden, Im givng the bike gas and its not accelerating. I'm like WTF?!? Thank god I was coasting down hill and the traffic was light. I get over to the side of the road, check the bike. All seems good, thinking to myself. WTF did I do, did the clutch or transmission go out because of somethign I did this morning. I pushed the bike to a church parking lot down the street and take a closer look. Hmm, left side of the bike seems good, grears seem to be engaging correctly, but its like Im in neutral. Walk around the back of the bike, and then I notice it. My wheel has a shinny area it usually doesnt have. THE BELT SNAPPED. 4040 miles on the odometer. I'm starting to get a bit miffed. Call the local bike towing service, get my bike towed into the shop. Time since I left my house: 1:30 hours. I made it 5 miles from the house. Get the bike unloaded and talk to the service manager. Belts are not covered under the warranty. I start arguin' with him (politely) the bikes got 4k miles on it, I never took the belt guard off - wtf do you mean its not covered under warranty. Its about this time the General Manager of the store is heading over to see why Im back in the shop. I should add in at this point, I go to track days with his son (who sold me my bikes) and I'm pretty involved in starting up our B.R.A.G chapter. I also come in and chit chat with him and talk to him about his son's racing endeavours on the 12R. I start telling him what happend and he offers me the belt from the 2004 race bike that they never used. I thank him and tell him I cant use it, because the belts/drivetrains are different on the 03's than the 04's. He says no problem, you can have the entire drive train from the 04 race bike, free of charge. I was pretty floored. Thats a good chunk of change that hes handing me over in free parts. So, I was a very satisfied customer at this point. I'm going to pay the labor, but hell for a free upgrade to the 2004 drive train, I dont mind that much. Now comes the best part. I ask him if I can have his son give me a lift home. He says, nope - we are going to loan you the demo Buell. I came home in a 2004 XB12R. Wow! what a nice bike. I was used to the pegs on my 9S so that took a bit of getting used to, but that bike is NIIICEEE. I know hes just trying to get me to buy one, but that wont happen for a bit. All in all, I came home a happy customer of Central Texas Harley Davidson. Oh yeah, I was unhurt in all of this. |

Woah! Your dealer's GM rocks! On another note, according to the instructors of HD's warranty training school, belts are covered under warranty as long as the belt guards were in place. Mike Luddy, Jr '04 XB12R |

Man we might have the makings of another great buell dealer. That is going above and beyond the call of duty. BTW belts are covered under warranty. but the point is they had parts laying aroung that they would never use anyways, could have sold them to you for a good price but realize you are one of their better buell customers and are obviously helping them promote the brand by helping out with the brag club. so they do you right. that is great |

Ah, but the real point is that there are still dealerships out there denying warranty covered items. Covered or not, everytime a dealership is uninformed, underinformed, or just plain doesn't give a crap about a Buell customer it hurts us all both directly and indirectly. Now, what can be done with a dealership that denies a warranty claim that should be covered but the dealership won't cover it? Not to discount the net result of what happened above though. |

Mike, Kick their ass, figuratively speaking of course. Personally, anyone who would believe that any part of a new product is not covered by the OEM warranty deserves what he/she gets. Kudos to Central HD/Buell! The cup is half full Mike! Sheesh! What's gotten into you lately? Got that Winter depression coming on? |
