Cold, it starts fine. Hot restarts get a nasty "GRAUNCH" out of the starter at first, then it will start.

Now, I seem to remember...there's a mechanism that pushes the starter gear OUT so it engages the clutch basket? Is it a simple (well, as simple as pulling the primary to remove the starter can be) rebuild, or something bordering on starter replacement?

It's been...over a decade since I broke a starter. I just don't remember.

Well i've had a few go out on me and its pretty straight forward. I took my starter out then took the four screws/bolts that hold the starter together then i just took the starter clutch out and took it to a rebuild shop that had it on hand. Most good ones do since its the same starter clutch that's in a early 90's Toyota Camry. then put it all back together. and don't forget a new starter gasket.

...what we did on those very same starters was replace the starter solinoid contacts(they do sell them separately as i know this first hand).Very inexpensive. You just take them out and go to a parts store and match them up(there are several styles and designs). And will last a long time. And +1 to Dwrecked as they are Toyota style starters.

Ltbuell makes another good point. I also upgraded my power and ground wires too.I cant really tell if it made a huge difference but it gives me that added piece of mind.
