My race muffler has broken the weld on the front, where the pipe goes into the muffler, so the pipe and muffler are 2 separate pieces. It also has broken the internal pipe about 2/3's of the way to the end, unless they come that way. The rear turnout is still attached, but I have no packing left at all now. I wanted to get a D&D , but they don't make one for the race header apparently. Now I figure I will re-weld the pipe to the muffler, but what about the packing? What does it help-or hurt- to have it or leave it empty? Will stainless steel wool work? Harry | ||

Buell issued that recall on the race muffler for the problem it sounds like you're describing. I understand that the internal neck on the new race muffler is different. Perhaps ... check with your dealership and Buell Customer Service to see if a replacement muffler is in order. DAve | ||

As far as repacking goes I reccomend it highly--will smooth the idle/ lower the tone of the exhaust/ and increase overall midrange torque (due to increased backpressure). I use rockwool (available at hydroponic suppliers) as it is dense and less prone to blow out than the fluff--you will need a long sharp knife (I use a machete) to carve the slab of rockwool in order to fit it into the can. i was thinking about putting in an aftermarket baffle in the race can. it would add a lot of back pressure and hopefully give me more low end power. has anyone done this?? |
