got the clamshell to come off easily today, don't know why it was any different. I guess the outer 'can' spins around the internals, could explain why it slipped a half inch when I loosend the clamshell last week. Looks like the locknut had backed WAY off. So is this the recall shock? (With clamshell and front mount strap for added protection)

This was the shock that originally replaced the ORIGINAL shock when it was recalled. Then after this shock had some catastrophic failures, IT was recalled. The recall for this shock involved putting the "clamshell" thing on it, so that when and if it were to catastrophically fail, the amount that the rear of the bike could drop was limited. The clamshell device was an interim fix until a third shock was released. The first shock had the exposed spring. The second shock is the one you have, and the third shock looks similar to yours except that the rear cast aluminum shock eye part is thicker and without the taper that your shock has. I have the same shock as you, but mine never had the clamshell installed. |

I cranked up the preload and now my belt noise is gone. I'll have to find out if the dealership actually did the Dec 2000 recall. Their paperwork says they did, but in Aug of 2000 so I have questions about their authenticity. I'll contact the previous two owners and see if they ever swapped back from the recall to an earlier shock. THANKS for your input! -Coxster |

there were 2 recall shocks you have an early one. I had an early one and after revalving and springs and a few rebuilds I tossed it away @80Kmi? My tuner said he couldn't rebuild it anymore and he sold me a Penske. Don't be cheap like I was, you won't regret it. If I had to compare a recall to a Penske, I would say it is like going from a volks karmann ghia to a porsche 911. |
