I have a two page thread going on buellxb.com about this. Maybe somebody here will be able to help. The issue is I'll lose spark. It started a few days ago when I road the bike to my buddies house. I let it sit for 10 minutes tried to start it and it wouldn't start. Crank over, fuel pump kick on but no bang. So I looked all the wires and fuses over and tried it again. Fired right up ran fine. The last few days this issue has gotten worse and more frequent. The problem now happens more often and the bike only runs for 3-6 minutes before dieing. No stumble no choking just like somebody pulled the plug on the ignition system. So yesterday I spent 12 hours going through every wire and component. I installed a secondary ground from my bike straight to the motor casing. I check all my connections and wires. No cuts or bad connections. I tried to fire it up around 12 and it fired right up. Turned it on and off about 5 times figured maybe I fixed the issue. Started to clean up and get things back on and it did the same thing wont start up. So I checked my plugs to see if they were getting spark and no spark. So I pulled up ecmspy and used the diagnostic tab and manually fired the coil. Both plugs would fire. Did a tps reset and loaded a stock map. Tried to start the bike and it fired right up and ran for about 3 minutes idleing smoothly. Then the issue happen again, by this time is was about 9 o-clock so I called it a night. Went out there this morning before going to work and it fired right up. The only thing changing is temperature...No fault codes no weird problems when it does run. Something happens and it cuts the signal to fire the coils. And like I said the only thing that is changing from when it does start and when it doesn't is heat. When the issue happens I can use ecmspy to fire the coils and it will send spark to the plugs. Doesn't that eliminate that its the coils? |

Did you verify that the head temperature sensor is showing approximately what it should show? If that went bad to the high end you might get into the protection modes in the ECM where it starts skip-spark. 190 degrees C is normally where the fan comes on. The other condition might be that the crank angle sensor is failing when it is hot. No sensor yields no spark. When it fails connect ECMspy and spin the starter or put the cycle in gear and spin the back wheel to see if the diagnostic page shows the position signal going from 0 to 5 and back (red/green alternating.) Same as checking the base mechanical timing only you don't care about the timing yet, just want to see if it is changing. If you are getting a good position indication, then you should look up the procedure to check static timing and check it, if your timing has floated too far off, it could stop running. Also as suggested in the other thread use ECMspy to watch your charging voltage, if it doesn't come up to about 14 volts then your battery or charging system could be dead, this has been known to shut the cycles down. Could be the the regulator is dieing when it heats up. If you don't own a service manual, you should get one ordered ASAP. Also as mentioned it might be worth logging a session with ECMspy from running to failure and using a file sharing site to share the log so other people can look at it. I would try to rule out the above three things first, though it might help to have another set of eyes on the log to help determine if any of the above three conditions are present. |

Greg your are the man. I never connected the dots but when the issue would happen the cps signal wouldn't change on ecmspy. |

OK, now that you think you know what it is, take the cover off the CPS sensor and prepare for testing. Run the bike until it stops working, hold an icecube in a plastic bag against the CPS sensor for a few seconds (up to a minute) and then try starting it again. and see if it starts, if it starts hold the icecube against the CPS and see if you can keep it running... Or just go ahead and order a CPS and replace when it arrives. It's possible that something strange is happening with the wires on the CPS so it may not be the sensor, could still be up in the ECM but less likely to be up there. |

I came home to double check the issue and it was idleing then stopped I messed with the wires coming out of the cps and tried to fire it up and its running great. I can't get it to fail...Been riding it around the block for about 20 minutes.No luck on it dieing on me. Who sales a cps for this model? |

Wow, it's expensive! I'd spend more time trying to determine if if it is a cut wire where it comes out of the cam cover or something like that. Just got back from another ride. I can't get it to die on me.....No cut wires, I can move and tug on them while its running and nothing happens.. |

Might be something else then or it could have been a loose connection on the TPS, might be worth cleaning the contacts and packing with dielectric grease. The connector is just in front of the front drive pulley behind the plastic cover. |

Went on a nice 1 hour or so ride, dam thing is running like a charm. I dont know what I did but I can't get it to fail at all. |

Since you have ecm spy; hook it up and turn the bank angle sensor off by unchecking.

I have seen several XBs that suffered from intermittent problems just like what you are experiencing and they were all caused by a CPS on its way out. It is well worth replacing with a known good one and going from there. They can be extremely unpredictable when they start to fail. |

I'm with Eric Z on this one and as well as the BAS. However a dirty/loose connector can cause it as well. What happens is a little heat gets into the connector and it expands just enough to make it loose contact. |

My intermittent issues/engine randomly dying and then randomly/automagically working again were caused by a bad relay in the fuse block. They are like $5...if I were you I would replace them all- cheap insurance. |

I do not. LJ @ Bumpus sold them to me for a fair price, and I needed to order other things from him anyway...so it wasn't worth the hassle to research an aftermarket solution at the time. |
