Hi Guys, I'm new here, and to the Buell brand. Over the last week I have been pouring over the immense amount of knowledge you all have shared on here and it is IMPRESSIVE! I have a few questions as I am finalizing a the sale for a 95 S2 on Monday. First, as pictured, the bike is black ( with a metallic black fleck) and orange decals, is this stock? Has Thunderbolt decals, is that a mod to the engine? how do i know if it has been done to the engine? Are the Wheels stock? First bike in 10 years, im pretty excited.  | ||

I don't think black and orange was ever a stock color for an S2, and I know the wheels aren't original. They should be white like the frame. The full name of the motorcycle is "Buell S2 Thunderbolt". An engine modification is thunderSTORM cylinder heads, different cams, and pistons to match the heads. Thunderstorm heads are black, not silver like the rest of the engine, that's the best giveaway. Other than the colors, it looks nice and stock - original air cleaner, header, brake rotor, caliper, windscreen, seat, bodywork. Very nice. Have you seen it in person? Are you sure it's not a very, very dark blue metallic called Black Sapphire Pearl? | ||

Thanks for the info! Ive have seen it in person, its an estate sale so things are just moving slow. It does seem to have a blue fleck in the paint but it has defiantly been repainted. Late last night I found an ad from a few years ago when the bike was for sale that stated so  A shame from what I have been reading about the quality of the original paint jobs on these bikes. I take her for a ride on Monday and if all goes well i fork over the cash and its mine! | ||

Depending how long its been sitting, don't be surprised if it starts leaking oil. That is not something that would make me walk away, though - leaks are common on bikes that sit, and are easily fixed with updated gaskets. DO NOT ADD OIL. If you check the oil pre-ride and it shows low, START THE ENGINE. Extended non-use periods can allow the oil to "sump" from the tank into the engine. The oil is still "in there", just not on the dipstick. As long as there are no clanks (lifter tap is also normal if its been sitting), let it warm up, and THEN check the oil. Depending what sort of a ride you take, you may or may not notice any "handling" characteristics...but if you don't "like" the handling, don't worry, it's all adjustable. Also ask if they have any of the "signature series" parts. There is a timing cover with a cardboard display holder; a laminated "information card"; and a letter from Erik Buell to the original owner. Oh, and if you dig around...original decals are still available, should you decide to repaint it in the original color. | ||

Yes, the guy selling this bike also had a couple others for sale. The yellow one sitting beside it is a drag bike, out of Florida I believe. What's the deal with those wheels you mentioned? Will they fit on and S2? | ||

Yes the pm wheels will fit and look more appropriate as they were an option. The slot pattern may the newer style but only the diehard collector would notice. | ||

Yeah they'll fit if you can find the front one. I prefer the ones it has but the color is odd especially with that frame color. I'd ask about any extra parts they may have laying around especially for the S2 since I hear parts are harder to found for the older rarer bikes. | ||

On the wheels it has - look at the base of the spokes, where they meet the rim. If they have "Buell" molded in, they are later style Castalloy wheels. Good wheels, and pretty easy to get replacements for. If, however, they have a lower-case "m" molded in....those ARE the original Marchesini wheels, and they are worth re-coating in the factory white. Or sending them to me, so they have a good home  |
