This is my second X1, I bought it from a 65 year old guy who had purchased it from a friend, "former HD mechanic" that had moved out of state. The X1 did not suite him so he sold it and I was able to get a pretty nice deal on it with only 948 miles. It came setup with D&D exhaust, race ecm, forcewinder. I have only been on it for a few weeks now, commuting to work, and it seemed to have been running a little rich but not all that bad. Just this week, it did not want to idle by itself, so I adjusted and it seemed to help, a little. There were small pops and backfires around 3k, which were happening before I adjusted the idle, and I had figured it was probably not breathing well or was too restricted from the routing on the forcewinder. It seemed too rich, I could smell gas on my jeans ... So yesterday I took off and made it about 3 blocks in 2nd and got some very loud backfires/misses and immediately pulled over and shut it down, I was bleeding oil out of the left side rear rockerbox (it had never leaked before). I know the rockerbox gaskets are a common replacement but I want to get to the bottom of why it happened so soon or why there was so much pressure build up ... As far as the rockerbox gaskets, I know I can get the metal evo replacement kit from HD but have also heard good things about the Cometic. I'd like to give Al my business though ... While I'm at it, XB rockers possibly? advantages to those? I need to get myself a copy of ecm spy, which I'm sure would help me figure out why it was running rich and backfiring but if anyone has any thoughts or direction I'd love to hear ... I'm going to try and get into the rockerbox friday. Thanks guys ...

Gosh, at less than 100 miles a year average, the engine may not have been 'exercised' enough to keep various seals/gaskets in working condition. Anyway .... If you haven't already done so, a service manual is in order. There are 3 seals per rockerbox; the failure could have been any one of them. The XB rocker box covers eliminate one of those seals. As to the running, try a new set of plugs. Yours may have gotten fouled from short trips, ect. And a TPS reset wouldn't hurt. Plus a check of your AFV setting. Hope this helps ..... Dave |

I agree to me it does not sound as though the two issues are related. You stated that you had pops and missing before the rocker box gaskets went out. |

I'd wager intake seals as another issue. Yours doesn't have the OEM covers on it, so you can squirt some WATER over the intake seals to check them for leaks. If it dies, the seals are leaking. |

I'd definitely be checking the intake seals. An air leak in the intake can cause the popping you are experiencing and can also create a lean enough condition to hole the piston. I'd say that the rocker box gasket leak is a separate issue unless perhaps you have already experienced pretty bad overheating of the rear head due to an overly lean condition caused by an intake leak. |

Dylan, Call me, I'm just up the road from you in Maple Grove. All of the above are easy to do. I've got all the parts, you would just need to replace them with new ones.. All the tools too! 612-six one six -seven zero 4 8 Sounds like intake seals, a TPS reset and possibly RB gaskets. I work for Summit Brad |

Brad, thank you so much for the offer, I would love to spend some time having you go through this with me and to meet another local buell guy. I will give you a call tomorrow to touch base and see when would be a good time to connect. I hadn't thought of intake seals initially but that makes perfect sense ... Brad and everyone else, thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes! |
