I am having some issues with my 99 X1 I cannot figure out, when the bike is cold it runs great. After a mile or two the engine misses and pops out the exhaust. I have replaced the intake seals, O2 sensor, exhaust gaskets, battery, ignition switch, ECM, Cam position sensor, coil, spark plugs, fuel filter and added fresh fuel. I have been trouble shooting this for some time now I have reset the TPS and AFV value. I am not seeing engine temperature do anything real crazy, with the bike warm it reads about 150-160C the intake temp seems to be in line with ambient air temp. I have checked the fuses for good contact the grounds as well. I inspected the wiring harness as well, I did not find anything rubbed through. Any one have anything else to check for? Here is a Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA1Ao4GIGkM |

What was the AFV when you reset it. |

I noticed that you didn't say you replaced the engine temperature sensor. Since your problem rears its ugly head when the bike warms up, that might be the culprit. |

I have not, perhaps at this point I should but I had been reluctant to do so because I felt fairly confident it was working correctly watching it on ECMspy. |

Ah. I didn't realize you had the capability to monitor it. When it starts to run like crap after a few miles, open your gas cap and see what happens. |

Check your exhaust studs/nuts. Same thing happened to me. I took off the nuts and lock washes, replaced with nylon stainless steel lock nuts. The nylon will melt on the stud when hot, and prevent the from backing off again. |

I once had the same problem with my 2000 x1. Check the voltage regulator. |

What would happen if I unplugged the temp sensor? Does the ECM go into a safe mode? |

Does anyone ever check the timing to see if it is correct before you start trouble shooting the MYSTERY PROBLEMS that are occurring ??? |

Really hoping I found it this time... This motorcycle is making me nuts. I found a wire that was broken inside the insulation tonight. It was for the speed sensor in the main wire harness. The only thing that makes since to me is that when the wire is cold it was making contact and as the insulation heats up it grows and stretches allowing the wire to disconnect. Thus making me nuts! |

Question:what was the speedo doing during all the time while these events were transpiring? That wire break wouldn't have anything to do with your"missing and popping" out the exhaust. It would either show intermittent speedo readings or none at all, depending the severity of the break.I had a speedo sensor "die" on me during a ride and the only "issue" was.....no motion of the speedo, till i replaced the sensor itself then life was good again.Times you have to "think outside the box" to resolve issues...and resort to the basics as well. |

The speedometer was ok, never did anything goofy. The tachometer would cut out as it missed and popped. To be honest I am not sure it is the speed sensor, the sensor with the bad wire sits just behind the starter and is held in by a allen bolt. When the wire would make and break the fuel pump would cycle and then I noticed on ECM spy I also lost the cam position sensor. That was the connector I was digging for when I started looking under the battery. I have my fingers crossed that this finally fixes my issue. For years if I hit a big bump it would pop as well, I always figured it was the side stand coming off the switch. Then last June it got worse and worse, I have likely 60-80 hours trouble shooting this issue. |

Great! All that for a broken wire. Was the break in the main wiring harness, or in the sensor wiring harness? |
