so i have owned my 99 x1 lightning for almost a year without the tach working and im finally going to fix it. so here is whats going on. it lights up however does not work (or move) ive never seen the gas light or check engine light ever come on (even when i blew a head gasket a while back no check engine light) when i bought it the guy said the tach works just needs hooked up. the bike has a dyna s ignition as well as an aftermarket rev limiter. (also bike has ben converted to carb) I checked the manual but the tach they show has way more wires attached to it than mine does (like my harness has less wires??) everything seems hooked up but does the tach on a motorcycle connect to the ignition as well? i checked the manual as well as tried searching on here with no results. could it just be broken?? Any advice or links to installing an aftermarket tach would be nice. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly helpful. will try and post pics tomorrow. Anthony. |

The module wire to the tach is pink. I'll bet that the conversion process involved a module change and the tech didn't hook up that wire. There will be a pink wire among the "abandoned wire" cluster by the module. Attach it to the pink wire from the new module. My 1998 S3 tach works fine with my 1999 M2 module on my converted-to-carburetor 1999 S3. St Paul H-D sells them cheap. Those extra wires are for the DDFI system. They go to head temp sensor, fall-over sensor, intake air temp, O2 sensor, and injectors. (Message edited by harleyelf on May 12, 2012) |

ok so i double check the wires and with no results when out and bought an aftermarket tach, i hooked it up and it worked, however after doing some research i have another question. on the back of the tach it has an option for 4,6,8 cyl. can i use this on my bike?? how can i change it to make it work or where can i find a cheap tach that will work? |

I see dozens of Buell Tachs come up for sale all of the time. Just read the classified ads right here in Badweb. I know you say you double checked the wires but did you clean the connections on both ends? Use the Electronic contact cleaner that comes in a spray can. You can buy it at Radio Shack and some Autoparts stores. Undo the connection, spray with cleaner and re-connect. This stuff dissolved the oxidation layer and other dirt that happens over time. Maybe one of the wires broke inside from being pinched, bent, or pulled. You can use an Ohms meter to check the wires or try hooking in a brand new wire just to see if it works after that. Not sure about the X1 but on the M2 I believe that the 12V from the tach instrument should go thru the harness and to the fuse block to the instruments fuse. One wire should go to the coil, and then there is a ground from the instrument to a common ground. |

thought you guys might want an update. i hard wired the original tach up and sure enough it came to life, now that i knew it was the wires i got a tester and went looking for trouble, sure enough the connection wire to the coil was bad, ran a new wire and after a year with no tach the "original" buell tach in now in working worker. I feel like this is a huge burden i have been putting off for a long time (almost 11 months, now there is such a weight gone. Thanks guys. |
