Which Forcewinder intake is best for the '96 S1? Differences, pros or cons of each? And best place to purchase? Thanks... |

None of the above. |

However to legitimately answer your question... The only difference between the xr and the XR-2 is the fact that the xr2 includes a new head breather system. Other than that they are identical. |

If neither, then what would be preferable, and why? I just purchased the bike and it already has an aftermarket AF of unknown type... some sort of semi-small, open, round HD type thing. Not crazy about it for a few reasons. I've always liked the looks of the forcewinder, they give more knee room, and they at least have a drysock for wet weather. Admittedly, I'm brand new to Buells, and have just recently begun my research in preparation of my first. But, I have seen a lot of Forcewinders in use so I assumed that they were a reasonable option. Of course I'm open to the opinions of those with more experience. |

Well I guess there is no real con's They work. Its an intake. It does what a proper intake should... in increases runner length. I just find them clunky, and large with no real advantage in performance. I'm a bit of a minimalist though. |

Ha! Well, I'll be damned... I just looked at your profile and it appears as though you're using the exact filter that came on my bike. Are you happy with it? Have you used it much in wet weather? Any issues? I'll probably run it as is for a while, so who knows? Maybe it'll grow on me and I'll save some dough. I guess I just have a case of farklitis and since I already liked the looks of the forcewinder. Well, you know how that works... |

Ah, no don't take that picture for good advice, bad for many reasons.. The bike came with that filter, and it is a absolute horrible solution. if you want to see what I machined up as a similar fix, but with great performance.. take a look at this. I lathed up an adapter on the carb with doubles as a second velocity stack, This adapter allowed me to use jet ski flame arrestors (filters) which have a much greater performance than any motorcycle options I've seen. I'm using a Pro-K filter which has a velocity cone molded into the top of the filter. I gained sooo much all over the rpm range from this setup over what you see in the picture.

So then, I suppose my original assessment was correct and the Forcewinder would be an improvement over what is one there now? I mean, the bike seems to run ok but while not real bad I did have to be conscious of my knee or else it would touch the filter. It appears as though the Forcewinder would increase knee room a bit. I'm also concerned about how this filter will work in the wet. While this is destined to be my "fair weather" bike, it's inevitable that at some point I'll get caught out in a summer rainstorm. Then again, there is always the LOOKS thing to consider... and I do like the hot rod look of the FW... |

I have been running a forcewinder for some time. It works. It gives knee room. Ease of maintenance is good. Downsides: needlessly costly. breather setup is a joke. it literally condenses oily water and dribbles it onto your right shoe. There was a performance shootout once upon a time and I think the original Buell race kit's tilted spam can was on the top of the list. I personally didn't go for this because I'm 6'3" and needed the knee clearance. |

Intake performance is all about air velocity. And quite frankly the forcewinder doesnt do a whole bunch in this department. |

+1 on the knee room and well... I think they look pretty cool. Performance I cant speak much on yet. |

Natexlh1000, Your comment was why I was asking about the differences between the XR and XR2. I guess my plan was, if I understood things correctly, to go with the original XR and then plumb the crankcase vents into a catch can to keep things clean. I'm not too keen on routing it back into the intake anyway, even if it worked without dripping and making a mess. While I agree that they are expensive for what they are and what they do, that's often the case with specialty motorcycle stuff. The XR is also less expensive which will offset buying a decent catch can. I'm sure others have done something similar, but does anyone have pictures of their set-up? I'm particularly interested in the catch can and where and how it's mounted. |

So, while I await further guidance, I thought I'd go ahead and throw out another question... Here's a couple of pics of the air filter set-up that came on the bike: Not sure if this shows what needs to be shown, but if so, can anyone tell me if I need anything other than the parts packaged with the Forcewinder XR kit? There appears to be what I'm assuming is a carburetor support bracket already installed. Right? Do I need to order anything else or is it simply a matter of removing the current filter, installing the kit parts, installing a catch tank and re-routing my crankcase vents? |

Yep. That black steel thing is kept for support. For some bizarre reason, my forcewinder's instructions said to remove and discard that. That's when I crumpled up the instructions and put them in the trash. Perhaps they corrected this by now. My kit was from 2001. BTW, What's wrong with the round filter you already have? Hitting your knee? |

Yeah. It's not too bad really but I did hit it with my knee a couple of times on my brief test ride. I could probably get used to it but I'm strongly considering just replacing it with a Forcewinder for the reasons stated above. In addition to what I've already mentioned, the PO has the crankcase vent routed into the rear of the filter as you can see in the pic. It hasn't been like this for long, but I'm sure, as noted by Natexlh1000 abovem I'm sure it's just a matter of time before the oil mist from the vent saturates the filter enough for it to start oozing. |

I just bought a '96 S1 Friday night. It has the XR2 on it. Love the way those look and I'm 6ft so the knee clearance is a plus. One down fall though so far...it pukes all over my pants leg! Need a catch can badly!!! |

I just ran a hose back and a cross so it dumps by the kickstand there's not enough fluid to cause an issue with the tire so its been working fine for about a year now. Venting to the filter also dirties it up real fast. |

Yeah. I'm running the breather to a tube next to the exhaust outlet too. It's mostly water and not even a drop a mile. The oily mist does show up on the inside of my rear rim though. |

Yeah, with my PM wheels I think I'd rather avoid the water/oil emulsion from draining, not to mention the occasion drip that would end up on my and friend's garage floor, driveway, etc. I plan a small catch tank with a drain valve and hose routed down low somewhere so I can drain the tank on occasion. I may build my own, or I may just buy one if I find what I'm looking for ready-made. Even if I kept the filter set-up that is on there now, I'd still reroute the vent into a catch tank to avoid the mess. Still looking for ideas of where and how to mount the catch tank though, and I KNOW some people on here have them.... So, come on guys, post some pics and let me see how it's done...
