So, my '03 XB9S Lightning started acting up after a trailered trip to Florida. When the bike is fully heated, it starts knocking like the lifters aren't getting oil and then it stops sounding like a 2 cylinder and starts pop-pop-popping like a thumper. You can feel it heat up under yer ass. Still has full power though.

Now, I should add that there are over 67,000 miles on my bike, it has a racing programmed ecm, a Jardine titanium exhaust in need of repacking and a blown airbox and that I just had a leaking head gasket replaced thinking that might be causing the trouble, but that wasn't it.

Took it to the local HD and they want me to okay $1500-$2000 to crack the cases and take a looksy, but I really can't afford that type of exploratory surgery.

Also should note that it hasn't thrown any codes yet.

I should add that when the bike cools down fully, it runs normal again until it heats back up. Very frustrating.

I would check your Engine Temp Sensor for a short in the wire to GROUND. I noted in your profile that you've replaced that part before.

Another thought is exhaust gaskets. That will make you pop under acceleration.

Regarding the heat, how hot it's getting, that may be because if you do have an exhaust leak, your O2 sensor will think it's running lean and release more fuel via the ECM to your injectors.

You can check for an exhaust gasket leak by holding a gloved hand over the muffler exhaust and check for leaks with your other hand at the header gasket at the head, both jugs. If you smoke, hold the cig around the head exhaust.

Sounds like your ECM thinks the bike is overheating, and going into 'skip spark' mode to avoid detonation. Once it cools off, all is well for a while.

So yeah, a dodgy ETS or something causing a lean condition.

I'm w/y'all. I think there's an issue w/the the ETS and I think I'm gonna have to go pick up my bike and start there. I have a couple friends w/an extra ecm they can lend me if that doesn't solve the issue.

I'll also check for an exhaust leak. It gets pretty hot under yer ass when its acting up. I was told that my head gasket leak was prob the result of overheating when I was suffering issues w/the voltage regulator, coil, etc cause by an arcing connector.

The "skip spark" mode theory best fits my scenario. Its not a pop under acceleration. Once it starts it continues until you cool the bike down either by turning it off or taking it up to full acceleration like on the freeway/highway. Its more of a thumping/pop sound like a Blast makes.

I'm also curious as to whether there might be a prob w/my fan or somewhere in my ecm map's cooling instructions. My fan rarely runs when the bike is on even on hot days.

Any other advice before I speak to HD again would be GREATLY appreciated...

If it feels like it's "stuttering" and "bucking" when, at steady speed, and then you roll on the throttle, then it's going into skip spark mode.

That is an ETS/ECM function when it senses excessive heat on the rear cylinder.

And that could be something as simple as a shorted ETS sensor.
