I was doing some general service and inspection on my bike. I noticed that there was a wire going into the center of the head that was chaffed a bit. Could be through the protective coating. My question is, what is this wire and could this be one of the reason why my bike spits and sputters while it is cold? Should I replace it? Thanks. |

It's probably the head temp sensor wire. It is a little mickey mouse how that thing is routed. And yes, for sure, if that is shorting out it could cause runability problems. That being said, 07's spit and sputter when cold. "They do that". I put a loose cable tie on mine to suspend it from the frame above the head so it doesn't rub. Hopefully the cable tie won't cut into it. On my XB9 I put cable armor around it, and that was still holding nicely when I sold it at about 30k miles. |

If you´re talking about the rear head, it is probably the Engine Temperature Sensor ETS. Maybe with some silicone based heat resistant tubing you can avoid that the signal gets lost to the ground. Grounding the wire, the ECM reads 0.0 volts or 0 resistance (or a similar value depending on the "quality" at the contact), which means for the ECM a head temperature of 572ºF (or at least a temperature higher than it really is). |

Ordering a new sensor now on American Sport bike. Anyone have the socket they want to sell cheap? Don't really want to spend $20 to use it once. |

Why are you replacing it? Put some quality heat shrink on it and some cable armor and be happy. |

Heat shrink will work on it if the sensor is not bad. When I changed mine I got an old deep socket that laid in the back of my tool box for a long time. I cut a slot in the side of it with a diegrinder/cut off wheel, and opened the slot so that the plug would come through. Cost = a few cents. Rough running when cold.....I would start with new plugs. My '06 gets started and sits idling for about five minutes before riding, whether it is warm or cold out, then ridden for at least ten miles. I hate to start it and not run it somewhere. It can be hard on plugs that way. If I take off before letting it warm up it will run like crap for about three miles. |
