As I embark down the road of customizing an '00 M2, I'm wondering what to do in terms of performance mods. Don't worry about what I've got. Don't worry about how much it cost. What is your favorite performance mod and why? |

The single most important part on a Buell motorcycle that determines its level of performance is the nut behind the handlebars. Beyond that, rejetting the carb and some properly inflated sticky tires are about all you need. |

1. Get or make a catch can and vent your heads into the catch can. Gas engines run much better when they are not fed oil through the intake. 2. A Baker 6 speed, 3. A Mikuni SR-42 ez kit 4. A good exhaust system. You will smile long time. |

You can get your stock gears back-cut and put them together with the Baker billet cut trap door and it is supposed to really improve shifting, a lot. Ditching the boomerang shifter for an updated unit will also improve shifting a lot. |

"Leather thong underwear" Performance mods, not cosmetic ones Josh I concur with the carb, intake and exhaust mods. IMO cams would be more just your preference once you've improved the way the bike breathes. (I like the stock cam torque, have ridden X1's and generally preferred the power on the lower end of the rev range)}. |

Rear shock every time. The single best thing you can do for a tuber. They all offer big improvements but the AST is the best made (IMO ) Intake and breather mods too but they're not really a performance issue...just common sense. If you've got an '00 the updates for the '01 model year are all worthwhile too. Gear linkage, primary tensioner, detent plate, front exhaust mount...no doubt some more that don't spring to mind right now (it's been a while!). |

On my S3 -remapping the fuel injection to my setup. I know it doesn't apply to your M2 but by far, it has been the biggest change. Smooth power from 2000rpm to redline -no hiccups, stutters or powerband effect at all. Loving this bike!! |

A better rear shock too. I use a Penske double click. How could I have missed that? |

My PERFORMANCE MODIFICATION idea is to TUNE out all the performance that is in your engine and suspension as it came off the show room floor !!! Not into BIG $$$$.$$ go fast and suspension parts ... ECONO GO FAST: Set the engine timing correctly ... Product Improve the OEM Carburetor(throttle opens all the way) ... Product Improve the OEM Air Box ... K&N Air Filter ... Improve the flow on the OEM intake manifold ... PRODUCT IMPROVE OEM Muffler ... Install 1.75 to 1 rocker arms ... Correct spark plugs and gap ... STP gas treatment every 5K miles ... SYN3 H-D oil in engine and transmission ... Correctly adjusted PRIMARY CHAIN and DRIVE BELT ... Product Improved OEM Clutch with correct adjustment ... Keeping the battery at full charge ... ECOMO SUSPENSION TUNE: R fork springs ... Lower forks at triple tree 3/4 inch ... Heavier fork oil ... Progressive Wound and more poundage OEM rear shock spring ... Tune the suspension for my type of riding ... NAPA brake pad stickum which reduse's PAD/ROTOR drag ... Not over tighting the wheel axles ... The correct tire pressure ... "THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS !!!" FOR EVERY 12 POUNDS OF BODY WEIGHT OR MOTORCYCLE WEIGHT REMOVED YOU GAIN ONE(1)ROLLING HORSE POWER THAT DOES NOT SHOW UP ON A DYNO !!! |

Buellistic: You know, I have two M2s. My intent is to keep the one with low miles (4000 at the moment) stock and your list is right on target for that bike. Thanks. BTW: are you saying I'm fat? (giggle and don't be too literal) |

Depending on the crowd you hang with, leather thong underwear may not be redundant. |

Going back to what Dave_02_1200 said first, and Koz5150 alluded to, and without really knowing your level of riding experience, a track day, or more especially, an advanced riding technique or track oriented class on your bike will do amazing things for making it go fast. And slower at the appropriate times as well. For me, having ridden on the track I'm a more moderate rider in general but feel a lot more competent when I do find an appropriate time to dial it up. Consider your weight and the bike's suspension set up (roughly 170lb rider), if it needs a little to cover your weight or riding level dial that in a bit, then take it to the track and see where it's lacking for you. My first track day my rear shock was a liability, got it rebuilt. My second track day I was surprised to find my X1 forks getting maxed out. Now they're rebuilt with race springs and feel seriously planted. LOVING the stock power plant with basic mods now that the bike handles. You don't want to put a 88" high-zoot motor in a chassis that is all noodley. |

I rode a bunch in the mid 80s. My only transportation for 4 or 5 years was a 1975 Honda CB 360T. Took a long hiatus and last spring I took a safety course and started riding again. I know I'm no expert rider and I also know I've seen a lot worse out there. I think I know my limits. There's an advanced riding school in the Twin Cities that I really want to sign up with. They have track day prep classes and I really want to sign up for one of those this spring. PS: In my generation thongs were made of plastic and we wore them on our feet. |

Most noticeable single improvement for power was the SuperTrapp IDS muffler with about 18-20 discs. First time I rode it, I said to myself "Wow! This is noticeable!" Alas, too loud for long-term, took it off. My favorite mod overall must be the 6-speed. I love passing some Mustang or whatever at 80, and upshift as I go by...see ya! My 2nd favorite is changing handlebars. Still not happy with the overall fit though, continue tinkering. Six feet 2 (74") on a 55" wheelbase. Changing from the race intake to the Forcewinder style was good. I bumped my knee all the time on the carbon cover. |

My favorite was the D&D "muffler". Don't know about the performance aspect but this is my all time favorite mod. |

Mtjm2: These are after market rocker arms that "i" purchased from CRANE CAMS ... In OLD SCHOOL LANGUAGE its the ECONO way of getting a little more valve lift with out changing the cams ... "AND" it is easier to change rocker arms than cams any day !!! In the lower RPM range whey the M2 was designed to be ridden, it will make the M2 even more fun to ride ... "i" tune to have more fun in the RPM range that "i" ride in, "BUT" there are performance benefit's up the RPM range !!! |

Happy birthday Buellistic.and thanks for the advice over the. years. The ONLY performance mod I've done in,the 13 years of '99 X1 ownership is a Penske shock and Penske fork KIT. IMO the Harley based engine just isn't ENGINEERED for anything over 100HP.And the money spent to obtain big numbers is far too costly for the results obtained. I tried it on an '87 Sporty.89 inches of unreliability. The thing always broke something south of the crank. Buy a Busa for those days you MUST have maximum accell. |
