My 1125r could use a coolant change but while preparing to do so, it occurred to me that perhaps the dealer changed the coolant while checking the valves a few months ago. Is it likely that the bike has fresh coolant or should I go ahead and change it? | ||

Not required for a valve check. Just passed 27k miles, due for one anyway. All in spec this time around, one was a little on the loose side.   | ||

Yes. I still have it off at the moment. This is the way I'll do mine from now on. Waiting on a couple of parts to show up that should have been here today, so it will be like this until next week anyway. I did build a small engine frame to support it while the frame is off. The rear is on a pitbull stand and strapped down as well. It didn't budge at all when I lifted it off. The only real pita part was a couple of zip ties on the wire harness that were between the frame and motor, just below the throttle bodies. Pretty tough to get to, but not impossible. Plan on having plenty of time available, it took me about 4 hours (including building the stand) by myself until it was time to actually lift it off. I had my wife give me a hand with that, it was fairly light. | ||

Btw, the actual valve check took all of 5 minutes once it was open. | ||

Frame off def the way to go. Not only better accesss esp if you need to replace shims. But you also put hands on a lot of the bike so you can easily check things like stearing stem bearings etc. | ||

By the way, coolant is cheap, even the HD 50/50 stuff is $20 for a gallon. It takes 0.8 gallons to totally refill. Good to -37 degrees F. Change it. And make sure you get the air out of the system after the refill. It's in the manual. | ||

Steve, mine is overdue far longer than I care to mention here.  You are always welcome here and certainly welcome to watch. Dont know if you will learn anything as I dont know what Im doing either but your welcome to drink beer, laugh and point. I need to do mine sooner than later. I am going to do my best to do it in a two day period as I dont think I could handle being without it longer than that. Trying to do enough research as to not have any suprises. I wish someone would post up some detailed pics or video of the shims being installed. I havent found any yet. | ||

It's not too difficult. There's a hard plastic retainer (brown?) that needs to be popped out to slide the follower over. Once it's out of the way, the shim is on top of the valve. Use a magnet to remove the shim, it comes out pretty easy. Make sure to cover the cam chain channel, stuff a rag in there or cover it to keep from dropping a shim in there. Zoom in by holding the Ctrl key and hit the + button a few times, it will keep zooming if you want to blow it up larger. Ctrl and 0 (zero) to reset after looking. The plastic retainer is at the very bottom of the open part of the head. There's 2 lines there on both sides of it. Lift it up a little and then either twist it out or pop out with a screw driver, either works.  | ||
