I am getting ready to restore my 1998 Molten Orange S1W. I would like to coat the inside of the tank to combat the bubbling paint issue. I was planning on trying a product called Redcoat. Anybody heard of it? Thoughts or has anybody tried anything different? | ||

I havent seen any pics of repainted tanks that have lasted a long time yet. Then a write up on how they were painted. i think there wasnt an easy solution and thats why the newer(X1) Buells have tank covers instead. I remember paint didnt stick well to the old Hodaka tanks! | ||

It's kinda frustrating... i'd like to get get going and get my tank fixed but with no definitive answer i don't want to jump into anything!Since it is ugly but still rideable, and I have the 1125 to keep me happy I'm not gonna risk it on a crapshoop. | ||

I have no idea why you need to seal the inside of the tank . The blistering is between the paint and primer . | ||

The myth is that the tanks are permeable. True? Not true? The bubbles I have on my tank are under the primer. | ||

I had my tank painted about 12 years ago by a guy that was an absolute perfectionist. I told him nothing of the bubbling issues. he had it for like 4 months and kept telling me that it wasn't right so he was doing it again. he never told me what he did but it's been that long it's been perfect. | ||

I don't know the process myself, but prep the tank properly for primer and paint and use the proper type of paint for the tank material and you'll be just fine. I have a "recall" / update tank on my S1W and don't have a single bubble on it. My '01 M2L has two small bubbles at the filler ring and that's it. 4 P's (no, not the Irish bar in DC...): Proper: Prep Primer Paint | ||

If the prep and primer is not done right , all the paint in the world wont help . | ||

finished the test on the donor tank.....it set up well, cured into a nice liner, then peeled right out to offer me a very good inspection of how well it cured. I would say wasted time and effort, except that now I know...  | ||

I used a liner I found from Hirsch automotive, its an alcohol and ethanol resistant sealer, though it did not stick or bond with the plastic tank. www.hirschauto.com if you see the other thread about "paint removal" I added a link to a guy that makes aluminum tanks for the buells...at 2,000.00 each...ouch!!! my buddy painted my black one a year ago, he used to do some painting on cars and used some aircraft grade paint hardener..it has to be able to flex with extreme temperature changes, thats my black one that has 2 small pin sized bubbles....it does not have clear coat on it, thought its been buffed to look like it. He doesnt do any painting any more though and it was only a "hobby" for him and an occasional one at that. I want to find someone who has experience with these tanks to get one painted. |
