First Buell of my own... Had a lot of ribbing from my dad in the past about not picking something "American made" since he's a die-hard Harley fan. Three years into Alaska later, and wouldn't you know it... Purchased the bike from ibppjr here on the boards. 2008 model with just over 4k on the board and a few mods / preventative maintenance taken care of... - 2009 Instrument Cluster w/ Gear Indicator - Ulysses front pegs - Clutch cover upgrade for the weeping issue - Redirect muffler tips (not sure who made them originally but I believe he said he found them on the board?) - 062 ECU Firmware - Denoided Think that's it off the top of my head. Definitely the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden (including a few cruisers), and I'm sure the Ulysses pegs help that. Only issue I've noticed is the same stutter everyone else has until a race ECM or Power Commander V is thrown into the mix. Looking forward to contributing to the mix! |

Zach: Is that the bike from Wasilla that was on CycleTrader and posted here in the Classifieds? I was thinking it would be a cool 3800 mile trip back to Wisconsin with it. Welcome. |

Sounds good! You'll have to let me know if there's anything planned for the summer. (Message edited by jaredc01 on April 13, 2012) |

If you've got time at the end of June, Buell Homecoming is an annual event in East Troy and is a guaranteed good time. Typically timed to coincide with AMA races at Road America - Lake Elkhart, Wisconsin. I've been to only two(08 and 10) but will make more for sure. Best roadtrips I've ever made.
08 "R"s have their issues, but the electrics are good. Post any questions and we will try to help . Just don't baby it. Zack |

Zack, I love to see pictures where guys share their hotel rooms with their babies. You're even nice enough to put a magazine under the tires to keep the room clean. This makes me wonder ... what do you say to them if they try to give you a room on the 2nd floor? I mean, you don't tell them that your room is going to be double-occupancy with Loretta, do you? |

If I can't get a ground floor, I move on. Couldn't find a room the next night, so I napped on a park bench at a rest stop. Had to run the motor every 5 minutes or so for warmth. Z |

Would love to make it to somewhere in the lower 48 this summer, but I'll more than likely be limited to Alaska. Any 'issues' in particular I should be made aware of? I've browsed around the forum quite a bit but can't find anything that might be specifically limited to the 08. |

there has been a rare problem with rotor nuts coming loose off of the crankshaft and destroying the engine. the fix is embodied by a change in threadlocker specification and by increasing the torque specification on the rotor nut. in theory, this could be more of a problem with the 2009/2010 bikes that have the high output stator, which runs hotter; it may be less of a problem with the 2008 bikes that have the lower output stator, but that's just a theory on my part. setting that theory aside, the service manual changed the service specifications for the threadlocker and the crankshaft nut torque in 2010, and applied them retroactively to all model years, including your 2008. there is an open thread on ths problem in case you haven't seen it: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/675822.html i'm one of those guys who thinks it's worth pulling off your rotor cover, cleaning off the old threadlocker, and torquing up a new rotor nut with the proper threadlocker. better to be safe than sorry. |

I have actually been following that thread since the beginning... Glad he's getting his engine replaced for free. Side the possibility of that, anything else off the top of your head? |

Off the top of *my* head? I'm the wrong guy to ask! I know a whole lot of detail about a very narrow area, and a whole lot of nothing about everything else! |

Some had a parasitic drain caused by a defective IC. Get a new IC(not cheap) Mine and a few others had cam surface failure, fairly rare failure. Very little metal lost, not major IMO. Several recalls, if all done, good. I have never lost an 1125 drive belt. 28k miles and 2 spares. Muffler can be used as a boat anchor. Eats tires. Z |

Instrument cluster was replaced with an 09 MY under warranty, clutch weeping issues taken care of under warranty as well, and all recalls SHOULD have been done already (as I was told the HD dealership took care of them) along with the latest software flash for the stock ECM. Bike was very well taken care of before it came into my possession. |

Got the new gear in today... And then promptly half-ripped one of the glove velcro latches. Going to see about having a local seamstress fix the stitching, though it's a non-vital part. Will say that STG's suggestion to order one size smaller than normal on the Icon's works great on the fingers, but it's incredibly difficult to get my hand into the glove initially (at least until they break in). Jacket should break-in nicely. On to the pics! Icon Overlord short gloves in white, with Scorpion Eternity jacket in phantom white (sans rear graphic). Added my Shoei X-11 to the mix.
