So I've been putting my X1 back together, the exhaust wrap has become tattered so I decided to order some woven ceramic, the tattered being fiberglass. Upon discussing this project with a friend he tells me that a couple of his friends have experienced exhaust cracking around the area where the exhaust wrap had been, it seems the wrap causes thinning of the walls of the exhaust pipe. Granted these events occurred on hot rodded strip cars, just wondering if the heat and vibration could cause this on my X1. Josh | ||

The wrap I had on my '99s3 retained so much heat it destroyed the ceramic coating. I was just trying to keep my leg cooler, big mistake. | ||

Yup! Wrap will actually help destroy the pipe. Ride in the rain and it gets worse. Even without moisture, the heat causes the pipe to fail quickly. Highly recommend against it. | ||

agreed. My KT systems exhaust (which I LOOOVED) had about 30 cracks in it after the end of 2 years. Tons of patches and repairs, I finally gave up on it. If your going to wrap... as cool as it looks, only do the first 8-10 inches by where your leg is.... | ||

Wrapping steel headers will make them crack, not as much on the stainless ones... | ||

generally stainless is better at handling more strenuous heat cycling.. | ||

Have had EXHAUST WRAP on my OEM HEADER for most of the 111,049.7 miles of it's life and NO CRACKS IN HEADER "YET" !!! | ||

The only thing that could happen is the fabric could wear away the metal like fine sand paper and make it thin of course this would happen to steel alot quicker then stainless due to the stregnth but if it is succured properly it should not have a back and forth motion! And yes it could mess with ceramic coating you should use one or another in that cituation not both | ||

The reason you ceramic coat your header is that it is much better that the OLD SCHOOL EXHAUST WRAP !!! You should never put anything over ceramic coating except a leg heat shield and "i" would not even do that if there was any other way ... | ||

New to the forum and just wrapped the exhaust on my 98 S1W a few days ago. Found the discussion helpful. The pipes on my bike were cracked and the PO welded them up and had them coated with a black finish-it is not ceramic, but I can't recall the process at the moment. His opinion was the cracking was due to improper mounting and an excessively heavy and poorly supported muffler. Either way, the heat on my leg is very unpleasant in the summer or on longer rides. The wrap has helped, but it isn't a complete fix. What are better options? Thank you | ||

Harley guys used to spray something inside the headers to prevent the heat from bluing their pretty chrome. Could the same thing be used to keep the heat from roasting legs? Dyno-kote is what a quick googling turned up but I have no idea if it does anything bad to O2 sensors or if it even works at all! | ||

Does anyone know a good source for an X1 pipe? Old David J has one on fleabay, and I can't seem to find any of our supporters that have them or in the parts section. Dropped my bike going slow and it broke the rear pipe under the wrap. It was wrapped when I got it and looked like crap when I took it off the first time so I rewrapped it, it would be nice to find a clean pipe that looks good on its own. If I can't find a new pipe I guess I'll just have to sell......... ....that damn sportster and have one made. | ||

Try Al at American Sport Bike, my s1W just donated its header to the scrap heap in two different pieces...I was concerned about buying a used one that may already have fractures so I called Al, he had a brand new one on the shelf. expensive but well worth it, I shipped it off to jet hot jet coating and had it ceramic coated. of course while it was off I went ahead and pulled the cam cover, sent it off to NRHS and had it cut down. bike is back together finally! |
