I have an xb9r (2003) It ran perfect for 2 weeks, then one day it just didnt want to stay running. It started, but died out after 2-3 seconds. I drained the fuel, checked the lines, put in new plugs, checked spark, re-filled fuel and now it won't even fire. it turns over fine, but it wont start. I tore apart the airfilter stuff and got to the throttle body. on the back side (facing the rear of the bike) the throttle body had a little 'plug' that s connected with 2 screws. this 'plug' then has 3 electrical wires going into a wire harness. green black and red. The black wire is completely exposed and the green wire is severed, nearly 100% through. Anyone know what this is or if this is the problem? I am selling my bike and the day the buyer came over is the day the bike didn't start. needless to say, i lost that sale...... |

I taped up the wires and reconnected everything and it still won't fire. I'm wondering if its the fuel filter..........any ideas? |

so the 'plug' is actually the tps. It is reinstalled, but nothing has changed with the original problem. any ideas? |

the battery has been tested for both voltage and cca. both are optimal. |

and I opened up the butterfly on the throttle body and saw fuel being sprayed in when i hit the start switch and cranked the throttle. I thought it might be the fuel pump or fuel filter, but fuel wouldn't be spraying in if that were the case. I am completely stumped here...... |

Spark, Fuel, Compression, and Timing. Its one of them. If you have good spark and are getting fuell I would check the last two starting with compression. Sure sounds like a fuel/pump problem but if there good???? Can you hear the pump prime when you turn on the igntion and kill switch? |

Check the plug wires from coil to plug. They can twist against the hangars, wear, and ground out. Check the throttle body to head bolts. They get a bit loose and messes up the air mixture. Like Rex said, there's only the Trinity to look for: air, fuel, and a spark at the right time. Good hunting. |

thanks guys. the plug wires are good (at least look good) I am getting the coil and wires tested for ohm resisitence today. the throttle body looks and feels pretty solid on there. one idea- I did an oil change the day before it quit running. This is my first oil change that I have done on my own. Do I have to do a TPS reset? I have ecm spy cable. no software and only a mac and an iphone.......... (insert little smiley with head banging against brick wall here) |

If you are getting fuel into the cylinders that part of it should be good. TPS reset may be a good future project but if you are getting fuel now than it is not needed to get the bike to fire. If you are not sure if you are getting fuel put just a little bit down the throttle body and see if it fires. |

check all the fuses 1 do you here fuel pump when you turn key? 2 have you pulled the plugs cleaned or changed them and checked for spark? 3 have you cut the wire that was chaffed through and made sure there was a good connection or just taped it? |

The fuel pump engages and sounds normal when I turn the key I grounded the plugs on the heads and the spark is good Fuel is being sprayed or 'misted' into the throttle body when it cranks I cut, connected and re-taped the green wire. The black wire is still exposed, but it looks factory and it's not arcing on anything. (these wires are on the TPS) I smell fuel after trying to start it and I can actually see fuel in the bottom of the throttle body. I pull the plugs and they are a bit black and wet. |

How do I check compression? |

I have never done a compression test on the xb but I have to imagine that its kind of a pain because the plugs are hard to get to. Thread compression tester into plug hole. Run the starter with the red rocker kill switch off so the bike will no be sparking(I think this will work). Run the starter for about 3 or 4 seconds. Check reading on tester. Not sure but I am going to guess a healthy XB will have about 150 or 160 PSI. Maybe someone will correct me on this procedure. |

Spray a little ether in there just to see if it is getting enough spark to ignite anything and post back with the results. |

be careful with ether that stuff is NOT GOOD for internal combustion engines. |

be careful with ether that stuff is NOT GOOD for internal combustion engines. I have a funny story about that, but I don't want to thread-jack. Brumbear is right though. When I say "a little", I mean a little. It doesn't take much. Don't try to keep it running by continuing to spray the stuff in there. Just spray a little into the throttle body to see if the engine will fire up. |

Does it make sense that you could lose compression in BOTH cylinders so suddenly that it will run one day and not the next. Perhaps I missed something? |

I doubt seriously it is compression and wouldn't even bother with the compression test (due to the irritation involved) unless I eliminated most other things first. The Spark/Fuel/Compression/Timing paradigm while ultimately true isn't as straight forward as it once was in the days of carbs and points. What I am interested to know, assuming you can get it to start, is if you can keep it running with the throttle. In other words, is it refusing to run or refusing to idle. |

I havnt done the ether test yet, but I just picked up the ignition coil and spark plug wires. The ohms resistance on the wires were within range, but the coil read 12,600 (almost double the acceptable range). It says to clean the ports and re-test. The ports look brand new, they are so clean. Could this be the issue? |

Sounds like it could be the culprit. Do you have anyone close that has an xb? You could swap for theres to give it a try. |

no one close has an xb that i know of. I will probobly end up buying a new ignition coil regardless. |

And you have no access to ECM -spy? Because it would be nice to see what your AFV was, sounds like it is either not sparking enough or is so rich it will not fire---thus the wet plugs. |

Check your main wiring loom for any chaffed wires especially where it crosses the battery ledge. Known issue from the factory on the 03s. I had similar symptoms. |

I checked the wires, they are good. I put on the ignition coil and now it fires up right away every time, but then dies after about ten seconds. If I give it any throttle, it dies immediately. The throttle body (butterfly) is not opening at all, unless I give it throttle- but I think it is flooding out. Any ideas about this? |

ok, I have ecmspy, but I dont have the drivers. The drivers are located here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm I have no idea which link to click on that page........I have windows xp. is it the 16 or 32 bit? then is it the newer beta or the older standard? All this computer stuff is extremely confusing to me, but at least im learning! |
