As promised, here is the Buell Race Pipe compared to the Pro-Series (Supertrapp) muffler. Take a listen to the video - I was originally going to setup some of my nice microphones to record this, but in reality most people will be watching this on a laptop or cell phone and the speakers will be crappy, anyway, so I just did it on my iPhone. Use a good set of headphones or good speakers and it actually doesn't sound half bad. Now, for the compare - both muffler are virtually identical in AVERAGE noise levels - about 87dB at idle and around 95dB at 2000 rpm according to a free dB meter app I have on my phone - maybe not totally accurate, but good enough for a comparison. I stress AVERAGE because there very obvious differences in the waveforms of both pipes that can be heard and seen on an analyzer. The Race pipe is much "sharper" sounding and this shows in the waveform with high, narrow peaks and low, narrow valleys. The Pro-Series pipe, on the other hand, is much "smoother" in character, and this is evidenced in the waveforms by no high peaks or low valleys but a smoother line through middle. Again, they both sound as loud as one another to the ear. My guess is that the smoother waveform on Pro-Series will be easier on the eardrums since the peak volume levels are measurably lower, even though the average volume is the same. Personally, I like the character of the Race Pipe more and was a little disappointed in the Pro-Series when I first started it, but after seeing the waveforms I'm looking forward to giving this pipe a try and see if it's a little more comfortable for a long day of riding. Burnin a little oil there chief? I dunno how your bike does that... mine would rattle backwards about a foot from reving up to 3,000 rpm. | ||

Burnin a little oil there chief? I'm not sure what to make of that, yet. It only does it when revved from idle. Top end is all new, only maybe 50 miles on it, so I don't know if the rings may just not be seated all the way? I see it didn't do it with the race pipe (which was also after the rebuild), so I'm not sure what's up. I pulled the plugs after it ran the first time and didn't note any oiliness... | ||

hmmm... rings should seat almost immediately. theres really not much seat in time required with these newer type steel alloy rings... | ||

I think the mystery is solved... I added some Sea Foam to the gas tank while it was sitting all winter and it looks like that will cause some white smoke out of the exhaust. | ||

What do I need to get? BTW..........The Pro-Series sounds like it would be better for the long haul S3. | ||

Not sure what to tell you guys with regards to the walking backwards. Mine surely does it, I notice most when starting it cold and have to hold the throttle open to about 2,000rpm for a minute until it will idle on its own. It will try to work backwards some, but easily stopped by just sticking my boot up against the side stand. I haven't done anything special to try to stop/minimize it. |
