Hi I'm new here and new to Buells. I have a 99 X1 Lightning. The bike runs like shit while the engine is under load at 3000 RPM and under. The bike runs great at in the higher range above 3000 RPM. I checked for an air leak around the intake using propane and found nothing. I checked most of the electrical connections and grounds and all seemed good. The only problems I've had with the bike was a bad coil which I replaced. Then I ran out of fuel once after the coil replacement and shortly after that this problem started. Could it really only be a fuel filter doing something like this? Seem odd to me that it's only in the lower RPM range and the bike idles fine when it's in neutral. If anyone here can help me out it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

A clogged filter will show up at higher rpm usage when demand exceeds supply. Not likely your problem. Fuel injected Buells should have the tps and afv checked via ecmspy program before looking too much deeper. Further searching on this board will direct you on how to do so. Good luck and keep us informed. SteveH |

It wouldn't hurt to check your timing with a timing light. They weren't all set correctly at the factory. The electrical connections to your injectors may have been disturbed when the coil was changed. A loose wire might make one might work better at high rpm than low. The coil wires could stand a wiggle test, too. |

Check your plug wires too. Visual inspection is not always conclusive. |

You've checked the fuel pressure? Got a factory service manual yet? |

today I replaced the spark plugs and O2 sensor, fuel lines and fuel filter. I started it up and let it warm up a few minutes and took a ride. Everything was fine for about a mile and it started acting up. This time worse than before. I'm letting the bike cool down and I'm going to check the intake and exhaust seals. I have a manual but not scan tool. I jumped the data port so I could get any codes. The two codes that came up were the O2 and front fuel injector. I switched the fuel injectors around to see if the I would get a rear injector code but it doesn't come up. I'll check the fuel pressure when I go back out. If it makes any difference I replaced the O2 with a Bosch 12014 sensor and the Plugs are NGK DCPR7E. Does anyone know if the scan tool the techs use on Sportsters work on my 99 X1? I have a buddy that works at the local Harley dealership that Will let me barrow it if it's the same thing. |

Well after checking some things out. I found that when I spray carb cleaner at the base of the rear fuel injector. The RPM's drop to the point where the bike almost stalls out. So hopefully that's what my problem is. Should I replace the whole injector or can I just replace the o-ring? |

Carb cleaner is nasty stuff to be spraying around, and really flammable. It'll melt paint, damage rubber, and is likely to burst into flames. Get yourself some WD-40 type multi-purpose lubricant (MPL) and use that. I had a Saturn SC2 with a cam cover leak that covered the fuel injectors with with oil, that picked up road grime, and they started blowing fuses. Hosing them down with MPL and contact cleaner, and replacing the fuse, would keep the fuses from blowing. For what that's worth... |

from what iv read on other threads this is a common problem and seems to be tied to running out of fuel. id do a thread search on "running out of gas" and see if anything sounds familiar or helpful. also post this on the "old school" page, might get more response. |
