Well, this is the second time around only now it is in "stealth fail" mode. Rock steady when you put a meter on to check output, but go out on the road and occasionally it can't react to load and spikes the voltage. Now the bad part, nobody has one! Tried my local dealer, none in stock and Harley has them on backorder with no promise date. They did a dealer parts search for me, nobody else in state either but showing one in New Rochelle. I could still ride to them and have one in my hands shortly, tried to look them up, no official web site. Went back to Harley dealer search, oh, used to be New Roc until recently now Empire HD. Called with high hopes, oh yeah this is the second call we've had about Buell parts that the dealernet said we had, but no. Well, with all hopes of a quick pick up dashed I go and order from Am. Sport Bike at least thinking I'll get it next week, oops, sold out and on backorder for 1 1/2 weeks. Now I'm wondering about aftermarket again. Most recent posts were the Compufire and the Shindegen Mofset I believe, both running about $20 or more over stock plus wiring mods. Has anyone run either of these for a while now or some other brand with good results? Still looking for a quick way back on the road. |

Oh yeah, 08 so it's two wire single phase. |

Keep us posted on how this goes. I am curious about aftermarket VRs for the 08 and up bikes, as well. |

Just about had it with the stock unit. I recently installed a Shindegen VR and new stator on my '08 Uly before rushing down from Brazil into Argentina. Fits up pretty easily. I mounted it to one of the oil cooler bolts. May sort out a more permanent mounting arrangement when I get back home, but this way seems to open up more air flow to both the motor and the VR. Spliced into the stock line from the stator and wired directly to the battery with 10 gauge lines. Runs much cooler than stock. From what I can tell on my voltage meter output is higher on idle and more stable though higher RPMs. DB |

I'd have liked to see more reviews. Ended up going with the stock unit, found one at Buellster Parts in stock ready to ship. Just arrived today, put it in real quick like to check operation, will finish install later. Found out that the tech that put the last one on under warranty didn't believe in dielectric grease. The sockets now look a little green, that may have contributed to the failure. I am definitely going to clean them up and put grease on them before putting everything back on. I am also working on some kind of headlight protection in case something goes wrong again. Must have light, I think that's as important as brakes and steering. |
