I have a 2010 Uly XT with about 14,000 miles on it. Since new I have noticed on a rare occasion a rattling noise coming from the air box at certain vibration frequencies. Recently the rattling has become more frequent. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it normal?

Consider removing the air box cover and checking the thing over. Last thing you want is for a backed out screw to get sucked into your engine. Only 4 screws to get that air box cover off and then the black plastic cover that holds down the air filter in place is just held on with flip up/flip down clamps. No brainer. Then you can see for yourself. Then ( just for informational purposes ) should you decide to remove the air box base plate make darned sure you heat those super loctited screws up before you impact screw driver them out. Failure to heat and soften that loctite will bite you in the butt for sure.

Then again, that rattling sound may actually be coming from the horn rattling against the front fairing cover. That was a common problem at one time.

The horn problem is easy to check and fix. Remove the front panel (the one over the headlights) and look on the backside for wear marks from the horn hitting it. If that's the case, just bend the horn support back a little so the horn doesn't hit the back of the panel when it vibrates.

...or just smack the flyscreen with your palm and see if you hear a rattle...

Thanks, I will pull the air box cover this afternoon and see what I find. I don't think I am describing the sound very well. I don't think it is the horn, but it may be.

The horn hitting the flyscreen will make a noise almost like spark knock. The sound is a very sharp, rapid "TAP-TAP-TAP" at a certain RPM range.

Let us know what you find.

it may also be normal intake noise you are hearing. Is it a high frequency buzz like noise? Or a rattle? With my 06 I noticed some noise under there and always made me wonder. Then I put on an open airbox kit from Al at American Sport Bike and the same noise was much more pronounced. Made me feel better knowing that's all it was.

I've been thinking it was normal intake noise, but I seem to be noticing it more recently, which caused me some concern. I'll get into it today or tomorrow and see what I can find.

Ok, after taking off the air box cover and the fly screen and tinkering around a bit, here are my conclusions.

1. It is not normal intake noise.
2. I can't find anything loose or amiss under the air box cover.
3. I couldn't find any evidence of the horn contacting the fly screen.

Still, I believe it is something, most likely the horn, contacting the fly screen. After I removed the fly screen I started the bike and no longer heard the noise. I looked closely at the fly screen and horn for evidence of contact and couldn't find any. I tried to bend the bracket a bit and put it all back together and I am not getting the noise any more, at least for now.

I do think I am going to replace the horn though. I had a driver almost hit me on the interstate yesterday by cutting over into my lane. I blew my horn and didn't get any reaction from him. I want a LOUD horn now.

After chasing down the buzz on my new to me 08 I found the front muffler strap was missing. The odd part about tracking it down was that it really sounded very similar to intake noise or the horn on the fly screen. I found an old post where a guy was complaining about the loud intake roar on the 08 he was demoing. Makes me wonder if it didn't have a broken strap too.

Vibration sounds travel through the bike and location can be very misleading. Good like finding your gremlin.

My hand guards rattle at the grip ends, there's a rattly lifter or two, something under the screen which may be the steering lock rattles, the windscreen rattles around because the grommets are loose in the flyscreen, and so on. Maybe I should buy a Gold Wing, or not.

I got tired of listening to every little noise from the valvetrain being amplified through the airbox and into the bottom of my helmet, so I stuck dynamat all over the inside of the airbox. Quieted things down nicely

(I only stuck it to areas OUTSIDE of the filter, so even if the sticky backing gets hot and comes loose, it won't get into the engine)

I'm not too sensitive to the noises the bike makes, I just want to make sure a new or more frequent noise does not indicate a problem that needs attention. I'm about to ride the bike to the gym, and I am curious to see if it is gone or not.

As I remember it, my horn only rattled against the fairing cover when at idle.

What grade of gas do you use?

Well, the rattle or whatever it is, is still there. Perhaps it is a normal sound. I can't find anything wrong.

As to gas, it is not an engine ping. It is deeper, almost hollow sound. I use premium anyway.

Dyna,

I have upgraded my horn to the PIAA 76501. It is much louder than stock, though it sounds like a very angry duck.

The kicker is that you can mount it directly to the turn signal stems on the Uly. It also doesn't draw too many amps, so you can use the stock wiring (no relay) and run it straight to it.

There is a good stebel horn that is MUCH louder, 139dB I believe, but that will require a relay.

Phil

Yeah, I want the stebel. I suck at wiring, but surely I can figure it out. When I blow my horn at someone, I want them to know they have been blown at.

Since day#1 with my 2008 uly, I have heard a deep klunky sound. I initially thought it was the bottom end and I brought it in under warranty a few times for that.
Nothing found related to the engine but they always replaced one thing or another!

Anyways, after the warranty expired, I dug into the airbox ecpecting to find some sort of rub marks or loose things.
I found nothing.
NOTHING WRONG.

Also, the engine ground strap was perfectly tight. so the slow cranking issue is still there as well.

It Klunks but it runs great.
It cranks over slow but it DOES start.

Puzzled but whatever.....
