As the title implies- while riding the Uly (2006) at highway speed the engine cut out twice for about a second or so and then resumed on its own without me doing anything, like nothing happened. Battery is new and holds charge. Battery is factory. Connections seem solid. Any ideas where I should look? Bike has 27,ooo miles and this is first time it ever done this. Thanks Ishai |

If the ECM is still bolted to the stock bracket; move it. |

My '08 did that a few times and it was the Bank Angle Sensor. I think your '06 has it in a different location so it's just something to check out. My .02$ |

I had a very similar problem with my 06, and very intermittent. Check all your grounds. I ended up having a ground wire that was broken under the insulation, giving the intermittent problems. Found it by chance. Good luck |

Thanks for these suggestions- please keep them coming. The bank sensor was relocated long time ago by dealer, also the engine came back on its own within a second or so. As far as ECM relocation I will try that. As far as ground cable I would think that it would cause this to happen way more often, but I could be wrong... so please keep the ideas coming. Thanks Ishai |

Streakbot97- which wire was it? Thanks Ishai |

Was the engine fully warmed up? My '06 will do that every time I take off from a cold start if I do not let it warm up sufficiently. It is funny, when I take off from my driveway it will 'cough' one time at exactly the same place about a mile out. Then it will not do it again until a cold overnight start cycle. |

Etennuly- yes, bike was into 4th hour of riding. As a matter of fact it was on a 4 lane highway at about 65mph. Ishai |

+1 on the ECM re-location |

I cleaned and tightened all of the ground points ( that I could find). There is a triple splice in the wiring loom along the left side going behind the fly screen. Like I said, all the wires and connections seemed intact, but the wire itself was actually broken. It occurred when the bike was warm, so I assumed the insulation became more pliable and allowed the wire to lose contact, but I cannot be sure. I am sure the wire was broken though. I also relocated the ECM, as this can also be a problem and an easy fix. My engine would seem to cut out for just a few seconds, but actually died completely a couple of times. Thought it was going to leave me stranded near a methed out trailer park at 3 in the am. Not too cool. Since these repairs, I've had zero of these symptoms return. Knock on wood!! |

Etennuly, My 06 does the exact same thing. When it is cold it coughs and jerks a bit till it warms up. If I let it warm up before I ride then there is no problem. Do you or anyone else have any Idea as to why it does this? |

I cannot say for sure what causes it, but I think the ECM is switching from " cold run rich" to " warmed up" modes. |

I also thought that it may have something to do with the ECM. I have a race ECM and have noticed that the engine runs better at around 3000rpm or higher. |

Thanks everybody for your input, I will pay close attention to these potential trouble makers. Please chime in with additional ideas ... Thanks Ishai |

I had the same problem with my '07. It happened to me twice while I was 300 miles away from home and at night. Brought it into the dealer in Santa Cruz and told to pick it up a week after that, they were closed, out of business. It was then shipped to Fremont Buell for them to look over. Never did it since and to this day, don't know what they did to fix it. I'm thinking a bad ground or the BAS. |

Rdkingryder-that is what I would like to avoid ...it's bound to happen at some point but I guess I am looking for ideas and suggestions where to look for known trouble spots. Thanks Ishai |

I think your problem was the ECM location as that's just what mine started to do and then it got progressively worse. I finally had to buy another ECM which I moved as far away from the seat pan as possible. That happened last year and all has been good since. |

Looks like quite a few are pointing towards ECM. Would like to hear any additional opinions or experiences... Thanks and please keep suggesting- I will look into any idea. Ishai |

Exact same problem with my 06. Does it every couple of hundred(s) miles with no obvious reason. Getting the grounds tight especially on the battery seems the obvious. Now that my battery needs replacing, it does it a bit more. When the battery was new it rarely did it. BAS was moved. Because it is so intermittent it has confused me. |

That is exactly how our cracked ECM headache started on the 09 X. And warm southeast U.S. springtime weather made things worse as the day heated up. Moved the ECM, then no more cutting out issues. |

Looks like ECM gets the vote. Has anyone tried to squeeze the ECM between the battery and fuse/relay box? Is that something that has been done? Ishai |

Yup, that's what I did, took all of 5 minutes work, including getting out and putting away the tools. |

Thanks...I wonder if it's too late as the problem already manifested itself, but I'll give it a shot anyway. Ishai |
