Well for one thing, why was the top end rebuilt at only 30,000? |

I'd say no reason not to. Now if it was a 2007, I'd answer differently. |

Based on data here, there is a higher-than-normal tendency for 2007 Ulys to eat their connecting rod bearings. My 2007 Uly suffered this failure at ~30k miles. An engineer at EBR indicated it was known at HD that they had gotten a batch of bad crankshafts that wound up in some of the 2007 XB12 engines. There have been virtually no reports of similar failures with 2006 models. |

$3500 is tempting, but I really don't like the 06. |

Froggy Care to share a bit as to why? I had an 06 and an 08 back when they were new. Returning to the world of Buells after a 5 year layoff Cash is limited, as always |

I too would question the top end build, but hey, that could just be from a cross threaded plug. $3500. I would do it if it was the bike I was looking for. I would rather do that than $7000 for a 15,000 mile '08. My '06 has 57,000 miles and there is no way I would sell it for less than $4500. |

Being that you had both, you already know the deal with them. The 08 is a much better bike, but you won't find one for $3500 for sure. |

If you are persistent in your searches you can find 08 Ulysses for under 6k. Mine has 11,700 miles for $5700. The trick is finding one close to home to save on travel expenses. With travel costs my 08 xt cost $6,200. That's still a good deal in my book plus the 08 rides better to me. Good luck! |

Thank you for the update Yes that is a good deal on an 08 However total budget is $5,000. Thus the 06 search |

If you are persistent in your searches you can find 08 Ulysses for under 6k. You don't have to look very hard. I had my '08 XT up for sale last summer for $5000. I had one guy tell me that 31,000 miles was too many, and the other responses were all Craigs list scammers. I'll probably put the bike up for sale again when I heal up a bit. Maybe I'll get more interest in the Spring than in the late Summer. |

Buy the 06 if the reason for the engine work makes sense. As mentioned, if it was a spark plug issue then no big deal. As you get some more cash you can slowly upgrade the 06 with 07 fork springs, 08 triple trees, 010 rear wheel and XB9 primary if you'd like more low end for running off road or in the city. Add a comfort kit and you have an excellent machine. |

Hell, for $3,500 I'll sell you my 2007 with 14,000 miles. Needs a new fan, though. Oh, yeah, and a rear rocker gasket. . |

Buy it. I have an 06 one (1st registered in Feb 08) with nearly 18K on it. No issues other than a broken belt. I'd get a Free Spirits Tensioner fitted. Helps belt life and takes the strain off the gearbox output shaft. I'd change the engine oil every 2.5K. I love my Uly!! |

"One of the Fast Orange Ones" I would "Pay a Dollar" for that? Need you, my young apprentice to use the Force in buying a used "X-Uly" fighter of the not Screwed up type. Ask you if the Lord "Messed with the Bike" has not used The Cheap Dark Side or the Waste of time "Hardly-D not Know-what-they-are-Doing" to fix it. |

I have an 06 with 52.000klms (I don't know exactly in miles) apart of the TB broken shaft and the BAS, I haven't had any other significant problem. |

My 06' has over 35,000 miles and runs great. I do have a 2010 rear wheel though but never had a rear bearing failure when the 06 rear was in place. |

Didn't Skifastbadly have an issue with his header coming off and damaging the head? Possible this one had the same issue? Hence the top end rebuild? |

Top end issue was "caught" by Dealer when issues with the ECM (which was also replaced) were being resolved. That's all we know from a post on Advrider. |

Treat your bike like your partner. Love it, care for it, treat it with respect and above all understand that no one or anything is perfect. |

Mine had about 24,000 when I sold it. I assume it's still running strong somewhere 3 years later. For that price, assuming the top end issue is reasonable, I would pull the trigger. You can probably even find some black plastic to make it look better. |
