98 S3, always a great starting bike. Suddenly bike would not stay running unless choke was out or at least half way out. First led me to believe it was fuel related, perhaps blockage in slow jet or somewhere in carb. Cleaned carb/ jets/ replaced all intake seals. Still nothing, pulled plugs, turned off shop lights and noticed not much or any spark. Plug wires are good, (no open spots). Perhaps voltage regulator? Also, rear plug very wet and fouled. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Have spark, didn't ground plug when testing (duh). Next step, going to test with carb off my S1 to rule out possibly missing something hidden from original carb. If not carb, I will check timing as I had cams out awhile back from restoration, perhaps timing plate came loose?

Because it runs with the choke out sort of indicates a lack of fuel condition. So, if cleaning the jets etc. didn't solve the problem, perhaps the cause is elsewhere in the fuel system.

If it starts OK from a cold startup with the choke and runs OK when warm without the choke but later starts dying while on the road, try opening the fuel cap to let in air. Then if it instantly recovers and runs good, the problem is fuel starvation because of a partial vacuum in the fuel tank caused by a defective tank vent valve or else there's a blockage in the vent tube.

OH and even though you replaced the intake seals does not mean you cannot have an intake leak. I have had to remove them AGAIN and reseal or replace them because they did not take the first time. Use some type of silicone agent like SILGLYDE to seal them as they move oh so slightly with heat cycles. It sure sounds like some air is getting in which is the need for additional enrichment.
