cylindrical displacement = pi * r^2 * h

or in other words, 3.1415926539 x (bore / 2)^2 * stroke

3-13/16 bore by 3-13/16 stroke actually comes out to 87.04ci. But it's an industry standard to round up to 88ci.

The popular 89" configuration is 3-5/8 bore by 4-5/16 stroke. Personally I think the big bore is the better way to do it.

With reference to the Buell 89ci it is a 88" with Patrick Racing cylinders, TS heads and all. I inquired about it myself and have been corresponding with him via email. Sweet bike!

57sporty,

It does sound sweet! Why is it advertised as an 89" though? Did he port the TS heads?

Yes the heads were ported by Geramony or something like that. He said they have a 62cc chambers which flatop pistons. Similar to the setup I had on my 88". It had 11.5.1 compression. I was considering buying it. So did it sale? I was going to get me a 03 XB9S black but Abernathy, TN dealer only had Sunflower yellow at 7585.00 O.T.D. I ended up buying a 02 demo X1 lightning w/1340 miles.

I'm going to look at it on Sunday and take it for a spin. Hopefully it'll be a wild ride! If everythings good I'll be putting a deposit on it PDQ!

Lee,
Did you buy the 88" Buell?

Just wandering how that ride went. I was going to buy it, but he never got back to me about shippers that could get it here for me.

Steve,

I did buy it. The best way he could sell that bike was to let me ride it! What a beast! Power everywhere. I just hope it stays together. It's a conglomerate of parts...that worries me but we'll see. I loved it though! 3 gear power wheelies!

Lee,
I just bought me a 2002 X1 lightning two weeks ago.
I never heard back so I know why now. You bought it! I sold an 88" Sporty. I really wanted that bike. So if you ever want to get rid of her or let me know.
I am seriously considering building one myself. The cost difference from a 1250 kit and 1426cc is 60.00 plus 225.00 to bore cases and about 400 for labor.
The motor has to come out of the frame so know big deal.

Can someone of You Aerocharger-people give me a hand? I am installing a charger to my bike, not aerodyne´s product but a system custom-built. Now I´ve heard that a Aerocharger-system uses original CV carburetor. I´d be really thankful if You could tell me about modifications to the carb or even send me a copy of instructions sheet. Thank You,

Juhana

Juhana,
Float height - 0.550".
Main jet - 240.
Fuel pressure at a constant 2psi above boost pressure.
May need to experiment with needles.
Stretched spring 0.75"
Do not drill or radius slide.
Make sure bowl overflow (not vent) is sealed.

Peter,

Thanks for the information! Sounds like a rather easy modification... So the carb doesn´t have any problems with vacuum when blowing through- I mean slide system, enrichener and so on. And no drilling as well? Nice. And what kind of ignition would you prefer- V.O.E.S system needs to be replaced somehow i guess?

Juhana,
Doesn't seem to have a problem. I've been told that the CV is more finicky to get right though than, for example, a Mikuni.
I was using the stock ignition system, but had ordered a Zippers programmable unit which has the capacity to retard under boost by using the VOES. I took the turbo off before I fitted the ignition though.

Turbo (Aerocharger) people - anyone been in contact with the turbo mfg. or Jim in NY lately?
I'm in need of a rebuild on my turbo and they are a bit hard to get ahold of. I know they were on some special "government" project, but that should be over by now. I have reverted to previous low-life lifestyle until Buell can be re-assembled - i.e. H-D rider. It's not pretty.

Leftcoastal, I have heard that story for 18 months+. I have said this before, its too good of a turbocharger system for the people running the business to ruin. It needs some "deep pockets" to step in and make it right.I'm gonna e-mail Jay Leno right now. Anyway,I have traveled in your shoes and GOODluck.

Left Coastal, have heard rumors that they are going out of business. You can get hold of the Turbo Doc,Steve Packer out of Ogden Utah.(sorry, left his card at home,so no #)I met him at Bonneville this year, really knew his stuff with Aerochargers. He seems to think he will have another supplier of same or similar units in the spring.(Hinted that Aerocharger was being bought out by someone who will actually do things.)

Thanks for the info - I do hope that the Aerocharger guys get their business sorted out, I have been very pleased with the performance and reliability I've experienced with the unit on my RS. Well, except for part where the 1/4" washer went through the motor and subsequently, the turbo. Words to the wise- RED LOCTITE! The turbo system was installed by the former owner of the bike. He has several bikes with Aerochargers, one with a 127" motor and what he calls "the big turbo" He said he was going to see Jim from Aerocharger at a snowmobile meet in upstate NY sometime around now. I'll see what he found out and get back to all with any new info. I see Jay Leno occasionally at various car & bike events here in LA area. Next time I see him I'll see about getting that email address for Vr1203, OK? AL

Judging from the spam email I get, I must be needing a "big unit" also. I have yet to talk to my friend about the turbos, but it should be within a day or 2.

Firemanjim, How big, how much CFM can you use? I have found a turbo you might be able to use, its quite a bit bigger than mine. You need to measure the bore just above the impeller on yours.Use a set of inside calipers. With that number I can compare the other one. How much do you want to spend?

I seem to remember that mine measured 1.53".This is going on a 100" motor. Is this the same body size as the kit for Buells, just bigger hat??head??can't remember the term??Be kinda nice if it fit in the brackets I already have. And as with all racing efforts,as little as possible.Keep me informed and thanks.

The difference is the compresser wheel size. But you can't measure that with the turbo assembled so the next best thing is the bore just above it. Bigger wheel = more air. 1.53" I think is too small, the turbo I have found is bigger. Its gonna be over $1200. But yours is worth something too. There might be a trade in the air!!

ID bore calipers inside compresser

Guys...don't forget that if ya want a motor with over 100 HP to last, you are gonna need to strengthen your bottem end!! I have an S&S rod and wheel kit in my S1; it has well over 25K miles on it. Yes it costs a few bux, but with over 250% of the stock strength, the peace of mind is well worth it!!!

DynoDave, I installed a 2000 Buell crank. Lighter and stronger than the one I had,1996 S1.I could't justify aftermarket. I didn't have any problem running the old one over 7000 RPM. I had to stop the money bleeding.

Question to the powers that be:

I've pulled the heads, (T-storm), and found the twenty-or-so thousandths setback on the combustion chamber. I've checked the clearance from the top edge of the cylinder to the edge of the taper on the T-storm stock piston, and can see no height difference. I'm appealing to the Buell gods of the Badweb:

I was thinking of milling 0.030 off the heads. Then, pulling the pistons & cylinders. Putting blue machinist paint on the head, and Bon-ami on the piston. Bolt the head to the cylinder, and push the piston down (aligned) and twist it around a little. Use a small file or two, and "mill" away the high spots, trying to get them to match as closely as possible.

Then, replace the base gaskets with 0.010", and use an 0.027" head gasket. I am hoping to end up with a squish between 0.020 and 0.030.

Does any of this make sense?

Ben
