Hey Motorbike thats WAY too hardcore. I am a 21st century Guy but I am not going to tolerate someone who WASHES there bike? That is unless its in a bikini. |

32,000 miles on my '06.Regreased at tire changes.I still say the best way to stave off failure is to have new bearings under the seat(I bought new ones when I purchased the bike) |

I'm on my third set and I have a 2010 wheel in a box in the garage. Funny, I used the excuse that I need to get the wheel before they become unobtainium in order to get my wife to shake loose the coin. This was about 6 months ago. |

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade regarding the 2010 3 bearing wheel Sheesh. I was expecting a catastrophic failure; you had my heart rate up. I just got a '10 wheel (warranty with a new swingarm after I blew a bearing and damaged everything back there. In the end, I agree with Dfishman, buy a replacement, place under seat, never have a problem. I had all kinds of replacement parts on my big ride... the only thing that broke was a bearing, which I didn't bring. |

My '08 XT with 22K is going in tomorrow for the 20K service and fork overhaul. After reading this thread I'm on the fence as to how much I should worry about my original bearings. I'll definitely have the 20 year veteran Buell tech look 'em over for me. Seems that mileage isn't an indicator, just the elements and some bad luck. |

mikef5000, did your bearing fail while you were on your Alaska trip? I don't mean to hi-jack this thread but I would love to hear how you got the bike fixed while that far from home. I thought it was bad enough that mine failed 75 miles from home and my brother had to drive my truck up to haul me and the XT back to my shop. Thanks. |

The only problem I have with the bearings is getting the dam things out. My axles were free but the bearings were stuck in place from steel/alloy corrosion. Once you refit them with Copper Slip/grease they should come out easy enough. The blind puller system does not make the job as easy as it could be either. |

Uly man, Heat is your friend. I use a heat gun that says it will hit 1050F degrees. I have painted my rims with good urethane paint over the factory powder coat, and have no problem heating the center of the hub to where it is hot enough that I cannot touch it. Then the bearings tap out from the far side with a sharp cornered 1/2" square bar that is over a foot long. I catch the edge of the inner race at the spacer tube and tap around and around until it walks out. I re-heat the hub and cool the bearings for the installation. They will go in so easily that they do no harm to the friction surface of the wheel that holds the bearing in. Putting in if I recall, the left side first, to seat in the hub, then the right side will lightly tap in until it just touches the inner race with the spacer. |

Well, I went against my usual behavior and pulled the outer seals off when I changed tires. The original orange seal fronts with 23k miles looked great - blue grease, nice clean shiny internals. I hope I didn't jinx myself by pulling those seals to check. Rear wheel, 20k miles, starting to show some rust in the bearings. Rather than take a chance for the next 5k miles...I just put the '10 wheel on that I had sitting here. I have new bearings for the 06 wheel and I'll build it back up as a spare if I need it. |

Good catch! They won't go much beyond "a little rust" before failure. I opened an greased mine at every tire change. I saw a little rust and failure was about three hundred miles out. It made a nasty squealing growling sound. Let us know if the hub had water in it. |

Didn't see any water, but everything had a hefty coat of antiseize from my last tire change. I always coat the crap out of the axles on reinstall.... |

'09X, Just put on some PR2s at 23k, original bearings felt great. I don't it wash very often, but ride in the rain every now and then. I bring some spares with me on trips just to make sure they stay rolling smooth! |

Add me to the list. 08XT with 8700 miles. Puked the sprocket side bearing on the way home from school last night. Grease still looks good and there is plenty of it, but blew the dust seal off and the bearings seemed kinda loose last night. Original orange sealed bearings. The last time it was washed was last June, so it is not from over washing it. I do ride in the rain as much as I don't, but like I said, there is plenty of good looking grease in there. No signs of rust, but I will know more once I get it tore apart. This was NOT the excuse I was looking for to mount up the new PR3 laying in the living room. |

That's a weird one. Usually water gets in. Even my X1 front bearing failed with rust and a collapsed bearing cage in there. |

At 25K +/- I was on my 3rd set of rears when I changed over to a 2010 wheel. The second two sets were SKF's and they still went bad. At 35K I am on my second set of fronts and one of them was a tad notchy 5K or so ago when I checked it. I greased it up a bit and went on a 4K road trip... |

I replaced the original bearings with the updated ones (I forget which color is which for the seals) shortly after purchase as part of a Warranty deal. At around 27,000 miles the left hand rear bearing fell apart while I was doing around 75 MPH in rush hour traffic. Nice. I put SKFs in, front and rear, and currently have 54,000 miles with no problems (knock on wood). I think passenger and luggage weight is what pushes the marginal design over the edge.
