Hello all. The rear shock on the 99 X1 I picked up last November has blown out. I knew it was going to happen, so......... First. Some recall shocks have just become available here in the classified section. They are 14 inchers and I have a 16 in setup. Does that bracket shown solve that problem? Second. I'm a parts guy by trade, so I'm a bit concerned about how long these 10+ year old shocks will last. They've been on a shelf for all these years laying on their sides. Do I want to spend 250 bucks on something that may blow out before the end of the season? Third. The Penske shock is awesome. Expensive, but it's F1 quality hardware. 'Nuff said. So, should I risk spending 250 bucks on a shock that will fail again, and possibly fail in only a couple thousand miles, or should I put that cash towards a Penske unit? | ||

After ten years on my bike the shock blew out. I am sending it in to raceTech for a rebuild. the cost is between $150 - 180 for a basic rebuild. There are upgrades (Gold Valve kit) but they cannot change your spring. Otherwise a slightly cheaper option is the Works Performance shock which starts around $799 and is completely custom built for you. | ||

Mine is all boxed up and headed to Racetech in the morning for the rebuild. Seems like they have a good amount of Buell showa shocks coming to them in the near future.  | ||

To answer your question, the 14" shock comes with the new front bracket that allows it to be used in place of the older design 16" shock. If money is not an issue for you buy the better shock. If not these are a pretty good deal but no guarantee they will last. Since raceTech will put new seals and charge the shock there is some hope in the event of a pre-mature failure. I had the recall done on mine and I have about 15,000 miles on the shock now. It's still good but I know it could fail on me. If it does I'm sending in to raceTech. I often wonder if some of the cleaners and solvents we use during maintenance may lead to pre-mature failure of the seals since the shock is on the bottom of the bike and tends to catch the over-spill from above. Just a thought. | ||

I ended up choosing the recall kit. Right now the Penske is too much. I can spend the money saved on a Corbin seat! |
