working here to get the sound level down on a blast with no factory exhaust.
please post up if you know of a way to get with in the new sound levels, to keep the sound police at bay.
at least here in Ca we must keep the peace or get a ticket. and future problems for our bikes.
right now i have a v&h "muffler" repacked but pumping out 120+db at ?rpm, and just under 90db at idle.
the sound police want under 80 db.
(any and all rpm's)
baffles?

How tight did you pack the muffler?

not very tight. left room for the exhaust to expand into the outer chamber.
the old packing was burnt up a bit.

I'd try really packing it in. While it would seem that this would make it louder, it actually made made my WB quieter. It'll also last longer.
Apart from that, changing the muffler to something else is all you can do. I dont think you have a prayer of getting it below 80db.
Believe it or not, the V & H'd Blast is not that loud. Because the sound is directly under your ears makes it appear to be louder than it really is. Restrained throttle use in high visibility areas can keep you from being harassed. I've been VERY close to LEO's and not been pulled over. I just didnt wind it out to 7000rpms on take off!!!
Have you been pulled over?

not as this date.
still open and not getting eye balled.

but when someone can hear me miles away it is a bit on the loud side.
but it does sound great wound out in a tunnel. :-)
some i ride with have complained saying it is a bit too much, and with the new laws coming down the pike i would just not have "problems" with the local or even distance leo's.

There arent any new laws coming out that arent in some way enforceable now. In other words, the only thing that could change is the LEO's willingness to pull you over.
Remember the "no talking on the cell phone while driving" law? That lasted about a week before everyone was talking on their cell phone again and they could've pulled you over before they passed the law. Some cities will pull every loud motorcycle over. Some wont. Act like an idiot and a loud exhaust is just a convenient excuse to pull you over.
If you live in the country, many motorcycles can be heard for miles. That doesnt mean that one lone cop is gonna hunt you down and pull you over.
If you're worried, find a stock exhaust and have it installed. Or take the time and find a cheap one to have installed in case you do get pulled over.

Attitude makes all the difference. Act like an argumentative idiot, that will get you a ticket. Act like a regular citizen who made the unfortunate mistake of having too loud an exhaust and you'll probably get away with just a warning to get it fixed.

FWIW: I can remember being pulled over twice in 30 years for too loud an exhaust. The first time I argued with the cop and told him to stick his fingers up the exhaust and check for baffles. I had a 6 pack stuffed in my jacket as did my underage friend. It was 3 blocks from my house, so it wasnt like I wouldn't see the cop again!
The second time (some 20 years later) I got pulled over for "having the loudest exhaust I've ever heard" (it was 4 ft of straight unrestricted exhaust!). I acted like a regular citizen. Polite, answered questions, etc.
I didnt get a ticket either time. (I did put a baffle in the straight pipe though. It...was...LOUD).

Lastly, if you ride with people that complain your exhaust it too loud, they havent heard a loud exhaust and my guess is they arent riding Buells or Harleys!

I have to agree with whats been said as long as you ride fine and dont bring too much attention to yourself you should be fine. I have a drag pipe (stock muffler broke off and I am running it as is) and its loud, Real loud. I dont go around setting off alarms (which is fun) all the time so I stay out of the way the only time I was stopped at it, I just told the cop "Small bike, loud pipes, gets me noticed" he agreed and let me go.

yes i know say only yes sir to any leo.
and yes one of the people i ride with has a bigger buell, and mine is louder.
mostly i am trying to fix a (for now) none problem.
i love a good sounding exhaust tone..but when windows rattle as i go down the street, car alarms go off when i am two blocks away..or when i must go to work..at 12 midnight - 2:am
the sound now, is fun when in a tunnel. like the caldacot, or going up hwy 70 out of orville.
but so far the chp officer living across the street has not said a word.

living up in the hills does have the advantage of, not too many complain about noise. but i try to not be a ass to my nabours and friends.

to me it is not..so..loud. but to any behind....another story.

Try repacking as tight as possible. You could install an additional baffle (under $20) before the muffler, but that might really kill performance.

Too Loud? Is that one of those myths like Too Much Horsepower?

LOL

I get complaints from people in front of me in cars, that they can't hear their engine to shift properly. LEO's haven't harassed me though, yet. I also use it to let people know they p'd me off...pull up next to them and shift down a gear or two and cruise alongside their window at ~7000rpm...or pull clutch and bounce off the rev limiter for a second or two, that's pretty f'ing loud.

To get quiet, stock muffler...anything else is pretty much gonna have some sort of loudness to it.

Funny story...some leathered up bikers got on their dressers and baggers, eyeballing me the whole time. They fired them up, revved a couple times. After my gear was on, before they started pulled theirs on, I fired my Blast up, instantly set off the alarm of the car next to me, their eyes got BIG. Backed up and upon leaving I set off two more alarms, they never looked away till I rounded the corner. I was smiling ear to ear under my helmet.

You ride a Buell. Have fun with it, who cares what others think.

not so much what others think. just some tend to avoid loud bikes..especially smaller ones that are much louder than theirs.

and the sound is not bad were i sit..just any right behind me get blasted with sound and the vibes coming out of the exhaust pipe.
but it is a blast going through a tunnel or even over the pardee dam (walled in).

only trying to keep the peace.

but if loud then so be it. it could keep a tail gaiter away?
