In the next week or so I will be bringing home an 02 S3T that is stock. At some point over the coming months, I am sure that I will want to open up the intake & exhaust. I would imagine I'd go with a race intake from American Sport Bike & a Supertrapp muffler as I don't want excessive noise. Problem is, I have no idea how or what to do about the ECM nor how to tune it to accommodate these changes. I'm trying to research things such as a Race ECM, which appear hard to come by, Espy software, which seems far too complex for me, or a Techlusion tuning device which looks like it kind of emulates carb tuning but does nothing for the ignition map. Hehe... I've got a lot to learn about DDFI! Any info, links or experiences would be greatly appreciated. I am horrible at interweb searches so please don't admonish me for not using the search function. Thanks! -Kris |

You could keep it stock, unmolested ones are getting harder to come by. Some people swear by ECM spy. I have never used it and I have an 01 S3. I was having some gremlins with my fuel injection, never could get it dialed in. I tried the Race ECM didn't really help, still huffed and coughed. Eventually, I switched over to a Mikuni flatslide, and a Daytona twin tec ignition. Went from making 72 rwhp to 86. It was a massive amount of work and research to find which ignition then how to wire it into a system designed for fuel injection. Never had a problem with the carb at all, runs smooth and starts every time. Gas mileage isn't as good, but still in the high forties (xl6 transmission). Good luck. |

Leave it alone and ride the damn thing. You'll be busy enough keeping up with all the things that go with owning one of these (isolators, cracking fenders and tail pieces, the clock breaking and falling into the dash, saddlebags cracking, leaking shocks, base gaskets, rocker box gaskets, leaky intake manifolds, TB resets, etc). You don't need to introduce any more problems. |

I have an 02 S3T I bought new. I put a D&D can and ham can intake on it after a year. The stock ECM handled it OK, but had a flat spot between 3500 and 4000 rpm. I could have lived with that, but I put a race ECM in it and that cured the flat spot. Tuber race ECM's are getting hard to find and worth the price if you find one. Try American Sport Bike and see what they have. http://www.americansportbike.com/ |

ECM Spy will let you load the Race maps into the stock ECM. That will be the way to go for no other reason than it's free. Keep in mind if you change the air cleaner on the S3T you'll have a hard time mounting the leg fairings as they attach to the stock airbox. I've left mine for the reason, but "gutted" the airbox for better breathing. |

My 2001 S3T has a full Race Kit (header, muffler, ECM, air filter. Runs absolutely great. Maybe the key is to do it all for a balanced system. |

Dave, mine is the same just not with the race air cleaner. I'd bet it's the least important part and makes a barely noticably difference. |

Thanks for al the advice. I'll provably ride it as is for a couple thousand miles & see how it goes. Question about ECM Spy -are compatible map files available from them for download? I figured programming it as a race ECM would be best if I open up intake & exhaust... Actually, my first mod for sure, will be installing the harness for my heated vest. If all goes well, I'll be making the final decision & picking it up this weekend which means a 250 mile ride in 30ish degrees. I have a Roadcrafter & with long johns, fleece pants & a couple layers on top with the vest, I should be fine. |

Added the race ECM years ago, upped the HP, dyno verified, and dramatically improved the rideability. Best investment I've found to improve performance. Second is putting good tires and finally improved shocks/springs. I went with WP rear and Racetec springs and gold valves. |

"-are compatible map files available from them for download?" No. When you're ready, post back here and I'm sure someone will be able to send you the race maps. Of course, first you need to get the software and the cable. |

+1 on the S3 being great. I run a 99 S3T with the race header/can/ECM/Force Winder intake. smooth and powerful, no issues at all. It pulls strong with no flats all the way to the red and sounds like a 60s stock car on over run. Thousands of trouble free miles for me. I think you get a good one or a troublesome one, not much in between. Good luck Brother |

I rode it this weekend. It's a 1 owner (who recently passed away & his wife had no use for it), completely stock 02 with 6500 miles. Did the paperwork now I have to get MA insurance & reg done (hoops upon hoops!). I hope to be riding it home from Philly at the end of next week... It felt good, no surging, no stalling, etc. Starts right up & runs fine. The paint is near perfect except for some scratches on the left bag from a no speed tip over. No cracks in the bags either. I think the only thing I'm going to do to it for a long time is put a K&N on the snorkel if I can find the right filter. I really don't think I can go hog wild on it. Somehow, it'll be more original if I leave it stock. Or maybe an NRHS 1250 kit... |

Do yourself a favor and fiberglass the insides of those saddlebags and make a 4th mounting point for them now. If they're not broken already (the crakes are pretty hard to see), they will be soon. You can get a K&N filter to fit the stock housing. That's what I'd do especially if you want to keep the lower fairings on it. |

Definitely going to glass the bags. I have a friend who is really good w/body work to help out. For the additional mount, I've been thinking of something inspired by a thread about glassing the bags & using well nuts. What I'm planning is to make new metal plates for the corners, drilling those to accept a well nut which will be sandwiched between the plate & bag when I rivet the plates back on. I'll thread a bolt through the bracket & into the well nut from the opposite side than normal. I believe that this will give the bags a lot of "wiggle room" & keep me from having to drill another hole in the bag. |

I just drilled a hole in that plate (had added a bunch of extra fiberglass for support) and ran a button-head bolt through it with some strategically cut rubber fuel line to provide shock absorbtion and preload on that corner. |
