Long time lurker, first post. I am caring for my sons' Buell while he is stationed in Okinawa with the USMC. Have been riding for almost 5K miles. Yesterday unplugged battery unit and warmed it up and rode 10 miles. Got off, visited a few hours and then started it up and put my gear on while it was warming up. After about 3 min it shut off and now there is no power at all. No lights, zero. Battery is 3-4 months old and is kept on maintenance charger when parked. I have been looking through the KV and official service man but haven't found a troubleshooting tip that mentions these symptoms. Battery is charged and connections seem good. 14K miles, recent, <1K miles, Michelin Pilot powers, plugs, oil, filter, primary change and air filter. I did the service myself. Turning key doesn't do anything. Thanks in advance for any help on this. |

Just have to start from the beginning. Does the batt actually have 12V. With the service manual in hand, is the neg battery cable actually grounded and intact. Then on to the pos cables and connections. Does the electricity get to the appropriate fuses in the fuse block, ect, ect. At least you are close to Bumpus, a good resource. |

If the key does nothing, start with the ignition switch (after re-checking the battery and re-grounding the black negative cable from the battery to the frame. Unplug the switch and short the three wires together and see if that has any effect. |

Clean and check the battery terminals, and try jump starting from another battery (***without*** the donor vehicle running). |

I had nearly the same problem with my 07 XB12SS. The engine would just shut off, not fun on the freeway. I finally diagnosed it to be the main power relay. On my bike there are three grey relays by the fuses. There cheap,just replace all three of them. Hope this helps. |

Finally got the time (read got so nice out that not riding was totally unacceptable) to go through the list of potential ills. The problem was two fold. 1. cheap cable ends on the cheap battery charger were corroded 2. Poor placement under seat damaged positive cable cover. Repaired/replaced both and bike fired right up. Thanks again. I'll keep lurking...much to learn. Thanks to all for the help.
